The film chronicles the true story of the late Laurel Hester (Moore), a New Jersey police detective whose world was shattered when she became terminally ill and government officials prevented her from assigning her pension benefits to her domestic partner, Stacie Andree (Page).

Mmmhmm. I heard that lesbian Subaru Outback honking.

Why does anybody care about the sexual orientation of celebrities? I honestly have never understood this. To me, what is most relevant is whether I enjoy what they do. For Ellen Page, it's her skills as an actress and the quality of her movies. For Anderson Cooper, it's the quality of his journalism. I have never and will never care about either of their sexual orientations. It simply has no relevance to me. Why is this even an issue?

Why is this even an issue?
Because people can/do/fear that they'll lose money/work if these things are, for want of a better phrase, out in the open. Also, I'm not just talking about the people themselves, but moreso those around them. Don't forget, each of these people (regardless of sexuality) is an enterprise upon whom a lot of people make their money. I feel this is the main reason that this, and a whole other slew of issues/crimes/etc, are kept quiet/covered up.

She can come out because her name is Ellen. Lesbians named Ellen make total sense.

That is a good point that a lot of people around celebrities depend on them for their livelihood, and if the popularity of celebrities declines, it could hurt those around them as well. On the broader issue, I understand that some think homosexuality is fantastic, while others think it is not, but I don't form my moral attitudes and beliefs on the basis of what a celebrity says. Whatever someone's views on homosexuality, it's ridiculous to take your cues on what is moral and what is not from celebrities. Your values should come from things like your family and your deeply held religious and cultural beliefs, not from Ellen Page. In my opinion, people should not be punished in the marketplace for who they choose to love. If someone chooses to punish Ellen Page because she happens to be gay, and has chosen to be public about it, I think that's crazy. If Ellen Page makes good movies, I'll watch them. I don't take my cues on morality from Ellen Page, and neither should anyone else. With the rare exception of extremely morally depraved behavior, I don't really care what celebrities think or do. I wasn't a huge fan of Mitt Romney, but I'm not going to stop watching Clint Eastwood's movies because he chose to endorse him To me, appreciation for a celebrity's work is very different from an endorsement of all of their personal views.

Good for her! Anybody know if she is gunna make a porno

This made me laugh -- Joan Rivers comments on Ellen Page:

Does this make me shallow...I always kind of disliked Ellen Page, but ever since she came out my admiration of her has grown such that I no longer dislike her.
