Best Stand Alone Song

Tools

Which song from a film which stands alone, not necessarily one that was originally made for that film, but one that is tied to it and connected to it do you think is the best?

I'd have to say As Time Goes By in Casablanca.
Firstly, it fits the movie so well [we've had a thread about these incidents before], and secondly it stands so well on it's own too.

That's my peice of bread in the sandwhich.
My three cents worth.

This isn't really the best, but "Build Me Up Buttercup" by The Foundations at the end of There's Something About Mary always makes me smile. I love the song, and it was a perfect end to a very funny, feel-good kinda movie (well, it made me feel good, at least).

The only thing I'd be nitpicky about right away is that you both chose songs that weren't even written for those movies, so perhaps I don't understand the question being addressed. It would make sense that both of those songs would stand on their own, since they were hits for many years before being incorperated into those productions.

But as you were.

Skimming, eh, Holden?

Which song from a film which stands alone, not necessarily one that was originally made for that film, but one that is tied to it and connected to it do you think is the best?
Okay, sir.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG IN A FILM:
I'll get back to you....

BEST NON-ORIGINAL SONG IN A FILM:
As Time Goes By in Casablanca.

Better?

I think the question's pretty ambiguous. The first song that comes to mind that I have inextricably linked, in my head, with a movie, is "I Will Always Love You," linked, of course, to The Bodyguard. There aren't too many songs that I really, really enjoy (I'm thinking songs here...not a score. IE: words are unofficially required), that I also connect with a movie.

I guess the real question is whether we're looking for songs that we enjoy that most people find connected to a certain movie, or simply songs that WE connect to a certain movie, personally. If it's the latter, then I'll definitely stick with my choice: the movie, and the song, both make me think of the other...and I truly enjoy both of them. If it's the former, well, hell, I dunno.

Bullet, maybe it was because you so badly mangled the spelling of "necessarily" that I tuned-out of that part of the sentence?

But now reading that part of your original post, it does seem contradictory to the general question, for the same reason I stated: if it was already a hit long before it became used in a movie, aren't the odds exponentially increased that it will stand on its own? By definition it already DOES stand on its own. The only way this question even makes sense is if you're asking about songs that were introduced through a film, but over time were strong enough to exist apart from that context.

Anywho....

Just write anything.
This thread went to hell very quickly.

I meant song, not score -- although my favorite scores are American Beauty and Traffic.

What song, original or non-original in a film is the best for you?
Done!

By the way, I spelt necessarily right in both posts.....

Nothing a little necicari editing can't fix.

And I know you were asking for songs, not scores. That much was clear.

To show you what I'm talking about though, here's what I would call a stand-alone song: "New York, New York".

It was written for the 1977 Scorsese movie of the same name, sung in the movie and recorded by Liza Minnelli. The movie was a boxoffice dud, and believe it or not "The Theme from New York, New York" (as it is properly titled) didn't even win the Oscar for Best Original Song...it wasn't even nominated (the shmaltzy "You Light Up My Life" beat out Carly Simon's Bond tune "Nobody Does It Better").

But, as we all know within a couple years Francis Albert Sinatra incorperated it into his act, recorded it, and it became forever linked to him, and not the movie it came from.

THAT is a "stand alone" song from a movie.

This thread is now offically a thread about any song from any film ever. Flop, dud, box-office smash, Indie, porn, comedy, drama or whatever. I don't care. As long as it's a song, let's talk about them...

And scores. If it gratifies you.

Honestly, Holden, you trouble-making peice of.....

Oh, any song we liked in a movie? Got it.

You're driving me mad, Holden.

Look. Forget that thread. Forget this thread.

Discuss something else.
It wasn't any song, I don't know...

I was listening to As Time Goes By. I thought I'd start a thread. But hey, it didn't work out. Instead it became very humorous. I think, anyway.

Maybe we should start a "Holden Made An Arse of Me Tab"?

You may have won the battle, Mr. Pike.
But you have not, nay! you will not win the war.

So. Favorite scores?

Gustav Holst

Well I'm madly passionate about Holst's work and I always thought it would make such a lovely score to a certain kinds of films and I only know of one film to use it called The Right Stuff which gave me goose bumps and chills and made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It's an Excerpts from "Mars" and "Jupiter" from The Planets. If anyone know were else his stuff has been used in a film I'd love to know.

Check it out Download it if you don't think certain people have used it as a stepping stone for scores like John Williams Star Wars Movies then you crazy he's the greatest composer for me.

Some of my favorite scores are Bernard Herrmann's Taxi Driver, Vangelis' BladeRunner, Ennio Moricone's Once Upon A Time in the West, and Ry Cooder's Johnny Handsome.
