The old one did not need to go into character development, because the cartoon was going on at the time, and so that was already taken care of. The new one had to because people might have forgotten.
For me the new movie was the best representation of what the cartoon was, the only thing I could have done without in the movie was that sigma 7 or whatever it was, and the long drawn out slide under the robot shooting my big gun scene, that was another that I could have done without.
