A system of cells interlinked
Is there a demo available for this?

Hello you

There was a pretty solid combat demo pre-launch, but I can't see it on the site now. Github seem to have an archive though

Mind how you go, if you enjoy it you'll be buying HOTAS sticks and all sorts before you know it (It is a lot of fun with a controller too tho - plug and play I think, but worth tinkering around and finding your own set up).

Think me and Dave would probably concur in saying it's still not a complete game, and you should probably just enjoy the demo and wait for it to get the content its vibe deserves. But it is quite some vibe (Plus, like, there's heat management and stuff. This game is pretty much made for you )

The People's Republic of Clogher
Yep, I've got a friend who regularly asks me about the state of the game and I keep telling him that it'll probably be stellar (see what I did there? ) by Christmas. Too bad it was released at Christmas last year...

Oo, some nice little 'ancillary' additions teased for Powerplay:

...the prospector drone. This can be fired off to investigate an asteroid and determine its metal/mineral composition.

...the main reason for adding the drones is to provide scalability for mining (in particular) thus making the larger ships more useful in that role.

... There will also be a bonus in created minerals or metals when mining at resource extraction sites. Beyond that we will have low and high intensity resource extraction sites. At low intensity sites there is lower output for mining, but also a heavier system authority presence and lower pirate presence. For the high intensity sites this is reversed, so is more dangerous with more pirates and less security, but also greater rewards for mining there.

... assassination targets will have to be hunted down in supercruise before they can be taken out.
The last one was one that makes total sense, and should be more fun and involved than base USS hopping. It'd be good if they improve the ways you can narrow down their hunting grounds (really wanna see 'tipsters' & contacts etc in stations down the line), but it's a good move overall.

And mining in high-intensity extraction zones? I think me and my Cobra could have some fun with that

*EDIT* I'm also wondering whether smaller fry could sneak in and nick drones returning resources with their cargo scoop, if they're skilled enough. Would be a nice extra dynamic

Hmm, looks like Powerplay is what you hoped in many ways D . Real focus on the mission depth and variety it seems. Guess the truth will be in the tasting (the example mission doesn't look majorly diverse from what we know). But at least if it's consistent, and comes with shiny rewards & more assessable risks, it should make the systems feel more complex/involved. Could be a good added layer.

I can see having fun roleplaying a bit around with this if it's robust (Although mainly I just wanna go mess around in the more intense extraction zones )

Not actually sure! Had a forage but can't see a date. Imagine it will be soon though ay. Q&A tomorrow with his saintedness too

there's a frog in my snake oil
Ahh, makes sense. On the plus side keeps the fairly-meaty monthly update pattern going

Finally got my Google Cardboard semi-working (the magnet 'input' was messing with my HTC). Semi-working meaning: Horrible resolution, movement lag, and the wrong aspect ratio thanks to ED's curious 3D options.

Aaaand, yeah, I lasted 5 minutes . It's a nice little hint to what VR could do for games though. Would really love for ED to establish itself over the longterm, and for me to be playing it 2 years down the line on a budget headset . The whole cockpit (and possibly the astronaut side) definitely lend themselves to it.

Homebrew is just too much of a faff though.

---

Had a quick play in open now I've sorted out some actual wired internet. Fried a few modules while scooping (I like the new danger warnings , but the 100%-heat-means-100%-heat caught me out!)

Didn't play with much else, other than to avoid the Strong Signal Sources I've seen. (Tales of Vulture Wings made me think I'd keep my Cobra intact for today ).

Oh yeah, and in case you hadn't seen, There Be Thargoids....

The People's Republic of Clogher
You can get good ointment in Boots for the thargoids.

I start the client every few days in the vain hope that the update has landed, then quickly exit it.

Yep I'm actually pretty fired up for a spell in Powerplay. I'm thinking I'll probably just use the Beta to refamiliarise myself with all the changes and then drop out again. A no-risk chance to see just how outmatched my Cobra is now there are wings of Fer de Lances around seems wise!

All depends on how good the actual mission refreshes are I guess. It's promising that the community seems to be actually ticking along alright, despite our absence . Community goals, wings, and hopefully now these factions & scaleable missions etc certainly seem to be helping.

I'm even pondering travelling around with one of the community radios on. Haven't tried Lave Radio yet, but Radio Sidewinder seems to have some really fun ads riffing on the specialist stations & products, and decent Galnet overviews (& adblock culls out the 'terrestrial' ads apparently, which is neat). The music is a mixed bag, but could see living with it just for the overall vibe.

Also hoping to play entirely in Open from now on. We'll see how long I last amongst the space trolls

*EDIT*

Hah, some of this fan radio filler is really class. The side-effects for Petrona Experience Jelly are excellent

There's also a daft Cilit Bang parody & a 'Black Market Report' read by a pirate

Oo, sparkly

*EDIT*

Oh sweet, Steam keys ahoy. May 28th...

We’ll soon be offering Steam keys to anyone who bought Elite: Dangerous from the EliteDangerous.com store who would like a key, and to anyone who buys the game from our store in the future.

The People's Republic of Clogher
Came in here to post about the Steam keys but seem to have been Ninja'd ... 12 hours ago. My reactions aren't what they were.

So Powerplay is basically coloured frogspawn?

there's a frog in my snake oil
It is ridiculous that I check dev posts for a game I don't even play

(I also checked reddit, and someone reckons they've decoded the alien artifact using trumpets and the Fibonacci sequence )

So yes, frogspawn. You get to hatch a galactic frog and race him across the universe!

there's a frog in my snake oil
Oo, dangerous.... I'm sliding back in. Example experiences:

RAGE: See warzone mission, happily accept. Go to designated system, find no warzone or civil war status. Spend 20 minutes flying around looking for errant stars in the distance that might explain this. Nope. Get offered nonsensical bribe to 'swap sides' by the apparent lone resident of this system. FFS.

JOY: Jaunted past a civil war by some twin suns, with handy repair outpost next door. Purty . Ended the night boosting at an Anaconda to make sure I got the last shots in, realising mid hurtle that I've been a bit reckless, then watching it explode and shatter around my nose as I arrive at terminal velocity. Close! . (Also loved just sitting on one of the outposts and enjoying the views. They really do feel like totally believeable oasis in the night ).

The joy bits were a pleasure to revisit. But dear god I hope 1.3 address some of the other stuff...

The community has some fun things going on in the meantime. I'm not often one for graphic novels, but liking the opening shots from this one.

*EDIT*

Oo, and I'm weighing up whether to actually try exploring. Reckon my Cobra could handle it pretty well, and I've got the assets to refit it completely. A week of wandering the stars while waiting for the Powerplay beta maybe.

It's either that or just save for a Vulture I reckon. Apparently a gimballed class 3 cannon can take out a 'Conda powerplant in two shots

there's a frog in my snake oil
Gosh darn it. There's still very little to do in space, but it sure is purty out there...

In other news, game now at war with itself (img)

there's a frog in my snake oil
Just dipped into the latest community goal. It certainly adds a frisson to trade...

The main destination is buzzing...

So far it's just meant lots of extra ship debris about the place, but knowing the headbutting Orcas of Reddit fame (and other legit spoilers) are running blockades definitely keeps you on your toes. Makes the 'verse feel that much more alive too

In theory I could even waltz off now and get 300,000 odd if they bring it home (hit the top tier requirement), just for participating. Might actually switch to a proper truck and see if can hit 'top 70%' tho. (Never thought I'd contemplate that )
