Greatest books never made into a movie?

I heard Neuromancer has been in the works since 2012
It's been on Hollywood's radar for decades, from my understanding. I remember Vincenzo Natali talking about trying to adapt it back when he was pushing Splice and that was 2009. I'm sure rumors could be chased back much further than that.

I forgot that one, but the only problem is Neuromancer had so much influence on sci-fi it would actually look a bit dated. It invented concepts that films like The Matrix have stolen for their own and I fear many audiences would think it unoriginal.

That's okay. Nobody's perfect!
An excellent choice I think- a novel dealing with sexuality and gender identity, that had great influence on the reading public, even beyond its so-called 'genre' audience is:

The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursala K. Le Guin (1969)
Winner of both the Nebula and Hugo Awards.

IMO it would take an exceptionally gifted director (preferably a woman) to bring it to realization.
