4th Movie Hall of Fame Nominations
Other than that link, there aren't any for either of those movies for IPad users. The VK link had a foreign voice over? I could have sworn I used that link and it was fine.
Both movies are widely available if you have access to something other than Apple.

Where is everyone at? Has not been any chatter in a bit. I rewatched Ed Wood last week. I may rewatch one more but I think my order is locked down. Plus I have got myself in 60's mode over here.

i watched Yojimbo last week and I really liked it. really fun westernized samurai film with a surprisingly complex morality to it.
i'm kind of behind, but i have Singing in the Rain and Trouble in Paradise being recorded next week and i own 8 1/2, so i'll probably start my marathon with those next week and watch nothing but HoF films.

Watched a few lately.
8½
Only my second Fellini movie (although I have since watched a third). I'll get the criticisms out of the way first. I tend not to love movie people making movies about movie people - it all feels a bit self important to me. Also, I tend to find Italian films a little cold. It feels like the focus is on the art and technique, which is great, but what always makes me love a movie is connecting with characters. The only Italian director who has consistently made me care about their characters is De Sica so far.
Having said that, I liked it quite a lot - although not as much as La Dolce Vita. It looks fantastic and Mastroianni is always great. I like Fellini's style and will hopefully watch more of his films. I just hope one day one can make me cry
On the Waterfront +
I mentioned in another post that I shouldn't have read about this movie before watching it. I got really distracted by the feeling that it was all just Kazan making excuses for having identified communists in Hollywood. It caused me to feel as though a lot of what happened was a bit unnatural. Anyway, I still liked it and thought Brando was great.
Punch Drunk Love +
Of these three movies this was the one for which I had the lowest expectations and it turned out to be the one I liked the most. Unlike many people, Sandler wasn't a negative for me going into it - I actually don't mind him. And I mean him - his movies I do mind as they are, generally, awful. I just think he is actually quite a funny guy and a decent actor who, almost without fail, is in horrible films. It helps that here he is cast opposite such an underrated but great actress in Emily Watson. She is always a complete natural on screen and she was here again. This was a funny and enjoyable film and I don't understand why Sandler has gone back to doing the same old crap after showing what he can actually do...

I've always been interested in the theme of women who become mothers and find out they weren't cut out to be mothers or decide that's not want they wanted to be a little too late. It's such a taboo subject and most of the time when it's explored the women are vain self-centered egotists or in the case of We Need To Talk About Kevin the kid is such a monster that you can't blame his mother for her emotional distance towards him. The subject still hasn't been explored in a way that I'm interested in seeing it explored (at least not from what I've seen) but Autumn Sonata comes closest.
Ullman and Bergman are top notch and it's a superbly crafted film. The conflict between mother and daughter feels genuine and true and it really digs in and doesn't shy away from the topic. So many other mother- daughter conflict movies seem to cop-out at some point.
For some reason I can't really put my finger on, I wish the story only involved Ullman's character and not the other daughter.
Now I only have three more movies to watch. I'm really hoping I get most people's list in. Is there anyone besides Guap that knows they are just not going to get done?

Misspoke. I have four movies left to watch. That won't be a problem for me. I can watch a movie or two at my dad's house if I need to.

That's what makes him so good. Because he's not that far from the characters he's normally played, he's weird, has anger problems, annoying sisters etc. but here we actually care about him and his character feels real and human, not something out of a cartoon, he has emotions and reasons behind his actions.

Jep. I agree with Daniel. PTA picked the usual Sandler persona, but placed him in a context that made the character actually interesting to follow. Sandler also is way more intense and focused in this film (probably because he was directed by PTA). His anger gets meaning and because the character becomes so much more relatable, the comedy also works better, in my opinion (it's sometimes very absurd, but at the same time we also understand him).

Thanks. I couldn't disagree more, but thanks for explaining why you guys like it. Honestly, I think he's better in Happy Gilmore than this.

With capable actors, which I think Sandler is, it comes down to project choices, right? I don't know if it is so much that I love Sandler as an actor more in Punch Drunk, its that I love the character he is playing more. There are three or four directors that I think are so far ahead of everyone else in the characters they create that they don't get bad performances in my opinion. I can't think of a single performance in a PTA, Tarantino, or Scorsese film that is truly bad to me.
So here is Sandler's career trajectory as I see it. Great success on SNL which translates nicely into three or four ideas for good comedies which for the most part follow a certain character type and formula. Sandler is not an amazing writer so he falls into a pattern of what most people consider pretty bad films that he is creating. PTA sees a character for him, casts him, for us PTA fans this is gold. We love PTA's scripts and characters and Sandler is just a part of that. Sandler goes back to making "his" films, why should we expect different results. He did not all of a sudden become a brilliant writer, he hooked up with a briliant writer. I would say, to a lesser degree for me, the same thing happened with Funny People.
If Sandler would decide to exclusively work with other directors instead of doing his own thing, I could easily see being a fan again. Unfortunately on his own we continue to get the same old shtick.
