Re: Director Dissection with Seanc and Rauldc

I'm very pleased to read that you loved Mystery Train as much as I did, seanc! I couldn't stop listening to Blue Moon (the Elvis version) for two weeks after I watched that film. I wanted to stay in...

Re: Director Dissection with Seanc and Rauldc

The Man Who Wasn't There is one of my top five (possibly even top three) favorite Coen films. I hope the other two can appreciate it more than Raul did.

That's the right attitude. I'm exactly like that. You shouldn't always trust it as a good indicator of the potential of a film, though. A second or a third feeling can be just as strong and wise, but...

Re: Director Dissection with Seanc and Rauldc

I think it's a mistake to ever underrate Keaton as a filmmaker. He's one of the purest artist of the moving image that ever existed. I guess I could find more depth, meaning and enjoyment out of that...

Very curious to see what you all think of Limelight. Buster Keaton makes an appearance in the film as well, in case you guys didn't know this yet!

I think you might like The Cameraman a little better, seanc. I think it has the best story and adventure of all the Keaton films I've seen.

I didn't nominate it, because I selfishly wanted to...

Re: Director Dissection with Seanc and Rauldc

Intellectual in a cinematic sense, I meant. Thematically, Chaplin is of course much more ambitious and "intellectual". My apologies, as that wasn't really clear from what I wrote.

Legitimate criticisms there, seanc. Even though I'm not bothered by any of the things you say and Modern Times is one of my favorite films of all time, I can perfectly understand where you're coming...

Re: Director Dissection with Seanc and Rauldc

Just to give a proper summary of what I've seen from both directors so far, like you did:

Charlie Chaplin

The Kid (1921)
The Gold Rush (1925)
The Circus (1928)
City Lights (1931)
Modern...

Re: Director Dissection with Seanc and Rauldc

I've seen pretty much all the well known feature length films by Keaton and Chaplin.

I consider City Lights and Modern Times as my favorite Chaplin films.
It's harder to say which is my favorite...

Yes, but it's also true that it's less easy to pick legitimate and blatant holes in (for instance) Fincher's work than it is in Nolan's work, especially when you're talking about the cinematic value...

Fincher has a mad sense of rhythm, Daniel.
Seriously, he's simply a much better director than Nolan. He's not perfect either, but he's much more "visually literate". That's why people who...

Those other directors that you're talking about don't need to be attacked, though, because noone is calling them "one of the greatest filmmakers of all time".

That's not going to happen. The two can't stand eachother. Clooney actually punched Russell in the face after he verbally abused an extra on the set of Three Kings (according to George).
