Foreign Film Recommendations
Like many americans, I've had my head up my ass when it comes to great foreign films. I usually go for the talked-about movie, the blockbuster and the occasional indie movie that catches my eye.
Though I've remedied that situation somewhat over time, I would appreciate if any of you would share what you think are some worthwhile foreign films, anything from an odd personal favorite to a truly great work of art, that you think might further my education in foreign cinema... As long as it has zombies. Joking. Subject matter matters not, just share anything you think is worth the time! Thanks bunches! :) Oh, and I'll take subtitles over a bad dub any day. :D |

Re: Foreign Film Recommendations
The Devil's Backbone, Gozu, A Tale of Two Sisters, I Saw The Devil and Audition are some other good uns. I'm trying to limit recommendations to horror, instead of general sweeping foreign films as you'll probably have seen the 'big' ones and hard without more specifics or feel for your tastes :) check out more the other films from the directors of them as well, generally all solid.

Re: Foreign Film Recommendations
Devil's Backbone, Audition, both excellent horror films. Saw a bit of Gozu, need to get it again. Two Sisters and I Saw are both already on the way. :)

Re: Foreign Film Recommendations
I wasn't as blown away by the latter as I expected to be, considering i've loved all his other films i've seen. You seen The Good, The Bad and The Weird or A Bittersweet Life? Add them to your list if not.
And you might enjoy Zatoichi and Lone Wolf and Cub series as well, though maybe check out Shogun Assassin first for a taste. |

Okay, I separated mine into categories: Essential/Canon (sometimes a little questionable but if it has a notable reputation that I'm aware of it went here), Overlooked/Hard to Find (if it hasn't been released on DVD and/or I haven't seen many people talking about it), and Undead Monsters/Horror (including slashers, and even if it also belongs in one of the other categories I'd put it here).

There's a couple of recommendation threads, but I can't find them atm. So I'll just post a few here.
For horror, look at Dario Argenta, Mario Bava and Terence Fisher. Look at Hammer films from the mid 50's through to the early 70's. Check out films made by Amicus Productions, too. I like Tod Slaughter films, so see if you can find any of those. Beware! While I think they're great, there's more than a hint of pantomime to them. :D I took the following post from GP's Hammer Films thread. The Curse of Frankenstein The Plague Of The Zombies The Hands Of The Ripper Dr Jekyll & Sister Hyde Dracula (1958) The Brides Of Dracula Twins Of Evil Countess Dracula The Vampire Lovers Lust For A Vampire From Beyond The Grave Dracula Has Risen From The Grave The Satanic Rites Of Dracula The Horror Of Frankenstein (this is just for Kate O'Mara, really. I wouldn't recommend it otherwise) The Maniac Straight On Till Morning The Nanny The Witches To The Devil A Daughter The Hound Of The Baskervilles The Man Who Could Cheat Death Vampire Circus Kiss of The Vampire I'd also recommend taking an interest in Amicus Productions (especially if you like the portmanteau films) and other British horror from between the late 50's and early/mid 70's. The Wicker Man The Blood On Satan's Claw The Witchfinder General Dr. Terror's House Of Horror The House That Dripped Blood Death Line The Vault Of Horror Horror Express The Tomb Of Ligeia (ok, this is Roger Corman, but he shot it all over here) The Theatre Of Blood Asian Battle Royale Bio Zombie Wild Zero Junk Memories Of Murder Eat, Drink, Man, Woman Infernal Affairs A Better Tomorrow & A Better Tomorrow II The Killer Hard Boiled Tora! Tora! Tora! (OK, so it's not completely foreign language, but I love it) Lady Snowblood/Lady Snowblood II Sonatine Raise The Red Lantern French The Horseman On The Roof La reine Margot The Double Life Of Veronique The Three Colours Trilogy Girl On The Bridge Elisa Noce Blanche Jean de Florette/Manon des Source Le Bossu Betty Blue Subway Nikita Les Diabolique Mesrine: Killer Instinct and Mesrine: Public Enemy Number One Rififi The Brotherhood Of The Wolf (I didn't care for it, but a lot of people do) Delicatessen The 400 Blows Jules et Jim La Grande Bouffe Un Homme et Une Femme Ridicule Joyeux Noël British Went The Day Well Things To Come 10 Rillington Place The League Of Gentlemen Late Night Shopping Blithe Spirit The Krays Bright Young Things Brief Encounter Kes Saturday Night And Sunday Morning Carve Her Name With Pride The Collector (1965) Village of The Damned The Cruel Sea In Which We Serve The Battle Of Britain The Dambusters Don't Open Till Christmas Dog Soldiers Kind Hearts And Coronets Withnail And I Get Carter (1971) Culloden The Long Good Friday (can't believe it's taken me that long to get to this film.) This Is England Dead Man's Shoes Zulu A few more foreign language films Danger Diabolik Man Bites Dog Babette's Feast The silent, but great The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari. A couple of British comedies that I've not seen, but I know a few people liked. You might like the Carry On... films as well. Death At A Funera (2007)l Keeping Mum OK, that was more than the 'few' I was thinking of posting. Sorry, I got on a roll. :D |
Re: Foreign Film Recommendations
WOW, thanks a lot, everybody! I'll start checking in on these asap!
|
You might like the Spanish films The Dark Hour or The Promise. I also recommend anything from Pedro Almodovar.
Since you're a zombie lover you've probably seen Dead Snow, but I'll throw it out there on the off chance you haven't. Two other Norwegian films I've seen are The Bothersome Man and Troubled Water. Both are highly recommended! Elite Squad is a pretty good Brazilian movie. Even better is Bus 174 both directed by Jose Padilha. City of Lost Children and Delicatessen are both from the director of Amelie Jean-Pierre Jeunet and both are movies I like a lot. Someone mentioned Tampopo. That's one of my favorite movies, so I'll second it. |
Re: Foreign Film Recommendations
Dead Man's Shoes, Delicatessen and Man Bites Dog! Great films. I'd check them if you like your horror

Re: Foreign Film Recommendations
I really love any Asian Horror movie, and the more crazy and bizarre the better, so here's some titles that I think fit into the very crazy/bizarre Asian horror/i'm not sure what to call them.
Machine Girl Samurai Princess Suicide Club Vampire Girl Vs. Frankenstein Girl Visitor Q Gozu Cure Infection RoboGeisha High School Girl Rika: Zombie Hunter Tokyo Gore Police Battle Royale Onechanbara : Samurai Bikini Squad Two Japanese films that are not quite horror but are really good are I Saw The Devil The Man From Nowhere Death Note (trilogy) |
