Actors that instantly turn you off a film

I'm sure there are some. Closest one for me is probably Nicolas Cage.

We have had this thread countless times, but Bruce Willis for me.

Re: Actors that instantly turn you off a film

Shia Labeouf

I really want to watch "Charlie Countryman", which stars Mads Mikkelsen but I cant bring myself to it because its a "Shia Labeouf" film.

I really had a hard time watching Lar Von Trier's "Nymphomanic 1" and "Nymphomanic 2" because of Shia. Thank god he wasnt in much of part 1 and I haven't even finished part 2.

Un breakable or sixth sense then. Or Sin City.

Miss Vicky 04-28-14 12:29 AM

Re: Actors that instantly turn you off a film

Sin City blows. I was thinking more along the lines of one of the first 3 Die Hard films, The Fifth Element, 12 Monkeys or Pulp Fiction.

rauldc14 04-28-14 12:32 AM

Re: Actors that instantly turn you off a film

Eh. Definitely not a Pulp fan.

rauldc14 04-28-14 12:32 AM

Actually haven't seen the others. Well I've seen parts of the Die Hard movies but not enough for it to count.

Miss Vicky 04-28-14 12:34 AM

Re: Actors that instantly turn you off a film

The Fifth Element is the most fun of those movies, IMO (and is in my top 100). It would probably work better for commentary than the others, too, since it's got a good amount of action and humor to it.

As raul said, there's plenty of these threads, but I'll chip in with:

Sean Connery
Nic Cage
Daniel Day Lewis

Hit Girl 04-28-14 12:57 AM

Benicio del Toro, yummy!

Miss Vicky 04-28-14 12:58 AM

Can't stand Silverman (except for her voice performance in Wreck-It Ralph) and Way of the Gun was awful, but +rep for this:

I don't get the appeal. I find him actually rather unattractive and have never been particularly impressed with his acting either.

Yeah, but he'd have to go away and pretend to do that too me for about 6 months before he felt he could do it justice.

Obviously, there Satan for me, too. And, with a few exceptions, Steve Martin is a good sign of crappiness. Along with:

Chevy Chase, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Jackie Chan, Adam Sandler, Adrien Brody, Sean Bean, Dan Aykryod, Sigourney Weaver and Mel Gibson (since long before all his public problems)

Samuel L Jackson (post 2000), Kate Beckinsale, too, but just because they're usually in crap films/films I wouldn't want to watch. I have no problem with either of them.

He's been good in some stuff and horrible in others, I think. I don't think he's been particularly smart in his career and has chosen roles he's not right for.

Lately he's not looking as good, but there is something so incredibly sexy about him. I don't normally get crushes on actors, it's usually confined to a role they play, but I've had one on him for a long time now. It's something about the way he moves.

Javier Bardem.

Oh I have seen a few of his films but wow... he's annoying. Its sad too because "Skyfall" is one of my favorite 007 films. My Argentine friend suggested I watch "The Sea Inside" and that's about the only one I can handle him in. I have "Goya's Ghost" and "Biutiful" on dvd (at my friend's suggestion) but I have yet to watch them.

I don't like either one, but Stiller to me is far, far more tolerable than Wilson. And Tropic Thunder was damn funny, though much of that is owed to Robert Downey, Jr.

I don't find Vince Vaughn funny either. He's a better actor overall than Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller.

Perhaps its because I don't like American comedies at all (I should say the more recent stuff within the past 2 decades)

He can be quite good, even in dramas, though he's made a lot of crap recently. I've loved him ever since seeing Clay Pigeons. I watched it for Joaquin. I loved it for Vince Vaughn.

Actually "Delivery Man" was a good film with Vince Vaughn. It was more of a Drama than a Comedy as most suspected it would be.

I suggest giving Clay Pigeons a try. It's a suspense comedy. Vaughn plays a serial killer. I also suggest Return to Paradise, which is pretty heavy drama.

Also, Vince Vaughn. How did I forget him? I've never liked him. Jon Faverau, too. Also, Paul Rudd (the only bad thing about Clueless), Greg Kinnear, Charlton Heston, Tate Donovan, Michael Rapaport, David Arquette, Jeff Goldblum, Freddie Prinze, Jr.

That last lot are just people who've turned up in Friends, which I adore, but by Christ did it have a load of people who ruin episodes. :( Especially Paul Rudd, who managed to ruin Phoebe. :bawling:

I never said that there aren't any good movies starring Christian Bale. 3:10 to Yuma is one of my favorite movies and used to be in my top ten. But I love it in spite of Bale, not because of him.

Also, I don't consider The Dark Knight Rises, The Machinist, American Psycho or Public Enemies to be good movies. I've not seen The Fighter, Equilibrium, Empire of the Sun or Rescue Dawn, nor do I intend to.

Deadite 04-30-14 01:19 AM

Re: Actors that instantly turn you off a film

I thought The Machinist was interesting stylistically and Bale's performance was very good but I figured out the "twist" pretty quick and the exploration of the guilty conscience theme wasn't exactly blazing new trails.

American Psycho was much better for me. Loved the horror satire of a shallow 80's mindset taken to its insane yet logical conclusion.

Zotis 04-30-14 01:28 AM

Re: Actors that instantly turn you off a film

Will Farrell's older movies and his SNL stuff was funny, but Anchor Man was the turning point. Everything since then I haven't enjoyed much. I haven't even seen his most recent films, I just ignore him now.

The only film I've ever liked Christian Bale in is Empire of the Sun, after he grew up his performances are too 'actory' . When we went to see Harsh Times in the cinema we had a terrible giggling fit, crying laughing at the homeboy talk coming out of his mouth. Hilarious.

There are a couple of actors I just can't stand, don't know why. The guy who tops my list has to be Matthew Fox. I watched his movie called We Are Marshall and haven't had the courage to even look at him ever since. Complete turn-off. Ugh.

Re: Actors that instantly turn you off a film

Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey in comedic roles but not in dramatic roles where I quite like both of them. Ben Stiller in just about anything. I would never not watch a movie because of them because there are always exceptions. I liked "There is Something about Mary" and I quite liked "Dumb and Dumber and Happy Gilmore." I don't think any single actor could turn me off a film. If I can tolerate Ben Stiller, I can tolerate anyone.

Bruce Willis (is becoming one of them)

Jennifer Lawrence

I dont know... I guess its just the character he plays.... the first film I seen him in was "8mm" with Nic Cage and well I was just relieved when he died.. . felt the same way about him in "Gladiator".

I know he's one of your favorite actors but its just like Jake Gyllenhall, who I cant stand either. Sorry Miss Vicky!

Ever since Batman and Robin this guy has been on my s**t list. I almost did not see Gravity because of this guy. Luckily I like Sandra Bullock quite a bit, so I went to see her. Glad I did too since it was an AMAZING movie in 3D.

He plays a whole bunch of characters that have little in common. Have you seen anything of his beyond those two films?

His role in Hotel Rwanda is really, really small. I can't recall if he even had any lines. If he did, it was like a couple of sentences at best. Not sure how you can forget him in Quills, but okay.

for Quills, it was more about Geoffrey Rush... I am a huge fan of deSade... how can I forget to focus on Rush's character.. Kate Winslet just had a role that mattered because of Rush...

Alec Baldwin (although I do like a couple of his performances, he usually turns me off).
