If it seems like La La Land won a lot of them last night, that's because it did. It was nominated in seven categories and won all of them, setting a new record. The previous high was six Golden Globe wins, set by both One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Midnight Express. Cuckoo's Nest went on to Oscar glory, winning five of its ten nominations there, being one of only three films in history to win "the Big Five" of Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and one of the Screenplay awards. Midnight Express went on to be nominated for a respectable six Academy Awards, winning only for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score. It should also be noted that both Cuckoo's Nest and Midnight Express benefited from categories that no longer exist. The Hollywod Foreign Press Association used to hand out awards for Best Motion Picture Acting Debut. Cuckoo's Nest's Brad Dourif won for his indelible Billy Bibbit, and Midnight Express won both for Brad Davis and Irene Miracle. The Globes ditched those categories by 1984, a couple years after Pia Zador's infamous and laughable win for Butterfly.

What La La Land's Oscar fate will be, we shall see.
