Movies for Dementia patients
I am looking for suggestions for movies for elderly folks affected with Alzheimer's. What I am looking for are movies that are one and a half hours or less, and one or all of the following: upbeat, fun, humorous, involve antics with animals(beethoven for example), are romantic(in the courtship sense, not a roll in the hay sense), have no death, tragedy, scary images, serious illness, or violence. Also, plot is secondary. In other words, with this short attention span, each moment needs to carry the film(good musicals fit the bill--ie. calamity jane--it doesn't matter if the residents can follow the story line, the singing and dancing keeps them entertained.) Also, it must not be juvenile; even though they are declining cognitively, many find this insulting. So cartoons tend to be out. While I love movies, my interest here is purely to find someone to help me. Unfortunately, when I clicked on help, it turns out no one will help you unless you have posted ten times. So, I hope someone can help me. It's not like I'm not willing to put my time in...I'm not selfish. I'm spending my time off trying to do something positive for my Alzheimer's residents. I hope to hear from someone!

Speaking of which, I've moved this thread to the Movie Questions forum. |

ok, let's see. will was right about Singin' in the Rain... and i'm assuming these are older people you are talking about, so i'm gonna recommend some older/old-fashioned stuff for now: Breakfast At Tiffany's http://img.listal.com/image/523462/6...%27s-photo.jpg My Fair Lady http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3SO27Igh8q...0-517883E2.jpg The Sound of Music http://cdn.sheknows.com/articles/Ede...undOfMusic.jpg Scarlet Pimpernel (there is more than one version of this film; i can only vouch for the 1982 version with Jane Seymour, which is a nice, upbeat costume drama) http://www.pirates-cave.com/scarlet-pimpernel3.jpg Some Like it Hot http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_C_8M2WVWfg...ke-it-hot7.jpg definitely check into all of these if you haven't seen them before deciding. hopefully others can recommend more. |
Re: Movies for Dementia patients

Depending on what you call disturbing, is slapstick too much, I think this would be good.

Re: Movies for Dementia patients
that is true...I thought of that. I need to preview each movie then, summarize an hour or so, so that I can help them pick up where we left off. (more work, ugh) :)

How to Succed in Business Without Raally Trying is two hours, but moves fast and is always upbeat.
A Guide for the Marreid Man has mild risque situations but moves fast, funny, and practically no plot, it is mostly brief sketches. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqZvHBRDM0g |
Re: Movies for Dementia patients
MGM musicals from the forities and fifties aren't too long like
On the Town Kiss Me Kate Band Wagon Easter Parade You might want to check out Danny Kaye's best movie, The Court Jester, to see if it has anything you would consider too intense. Alzheimer patients would probably love Danny Kaye (but not Jerry Lewis). |
