He can't be tried again

British black and white movie. Low budget crime. Possibly 1940's.

A man spends years in prison for a murder he did not commit. No body found.

When he is eventually released, he finds the man (a criminal) he is supposed to have killed is still alive.

He kills him and as the police grab him, he tells them he has already served time for killing the man so how can he be tried again for the same murder?

Afraid I'm not coming up with any titles for this one, whilst Googling 'double jeopardy plot in movies' proved about as helpful as repeatedly slamming a door on my fingers ....and sadly now all my head wants to concentrate on is a certain song by The Who thanks to the thread title :D

Sorry to have been slightly less than no help at all on this one.

Re: He can't be tried again

It sounds vaguely similar to the Shunderson plotline from People Will Talk (1951) but not to anything else about it.

Thanks for trying, but no.

I don't think it had any big names in the film and it was very "gritty", and I think played out in London's East End, and prison.
