Dune was boring

I went to watch Dune earlier today at IMAX screen. I was looking forward due to the film having massive lineup of well know actors and the theme and illustrations of the film based on trailer appealed to me but sassily after watching 2.5 hours of the entirety of film I just found it boring and just didn’t get it. It’s one of those films I’ve really wanted to like but I just couldn’t. I had the same reaction when I’ve watched Blade Runner 2049

I thought it was excellent, a 9/10 from me.

I wouldn't say it was boring, but it was a bit... ...detached?

I am glad that I saw it and 2049, but it is something like appreciating a painting. Beautiful to look at, but also static/inert. Even in the action and the violence there is sort of stillness to it.

Dune: Part One had a very narrow plot line. This does not mean it was boring! To understand ALL of the nuances and details, I've seen part one 6 times since it came out. I plan on seeing part two a lot more because it is much more dense than the first one. 10/10 movies in my opinion

Has there ever been a version of Dune that wasn't boring?
(I shouldn't ask since I never read the book. Is it boring as well?)

I wouldn't call it boring, but I did have some issues with it here and there.

Thank you for saving 3 hours of my life. I was gonna watch it but now will skip it.

Yeah, you can not watch Dune so you can better spend that time doing other things, like complaining about Dune.

Fall asleep in the middle of the first movie! No chance gonna watch it ever again!

I will remark that it was better than watching the paint I'd put on the dining room walls earlier that day dry.

I might try again some time. I'd like to know what people saw in it, but it really was just too much sand for me.

We are all talking about Dune 1 and not Dune 2?...I'll probably catch Dune 2. Dune 1 didn't do much for me.

Not all boredom is created equal.

What makes something boring? At what point is it the artists fault? At what point is it the viewers fault?

I can't define boring, but like porn, I know it when I see it. Or course, it's the fault of the whole chain....producing, writing, directing, acting. You'd think they'd watch the movie before the release it, show it to a target audience, etc., especially since it IS a multi-million dollar investment. Somewhere in that process, someone must have uttered the "Boring!" word.

So your assumption is none of these things were done beforehand because you thought it was boring. And the intent of everyone who made it was wrong because you found it boring.

So where does that leave all the people who loved it exactly as it is? Or are they a part of the problem as well?

Dune Part 1- boring, but in hindsight necessary.
Dune Part 2- great, not boring at all.

Re: Dune was boring

I didn't have much love for Dune 1. But the content meant I was never really going to like it. Sci Fi Fantasy isn't my thing.

Dune 2 l (and 3) therefore look like being the first Villeneuve movies I've chosen to skip.

crumbsroom 03-20-24 10:55 AM

It should also be said that "I know it when I see it' is justifiably cited as one of the most infamously lousy things a judge has ever uttered from the bench. It's designed to elevate the emotional reaction of one individual above that of everyone else's experience with the same material.
