Movies for Dementia patients
 

I am looking for suggestions for movies for elderly folks affected with Alzheimer's. What I am looking for are movies that are one and a half hours or less, and one or all of the following: upbeat, fun, humorous, involve antics with animals(beethoven for example), are romantic(in the courtship sense, not a roll in the hay sense), have no death, tragedy, scary images, serious illness, or violence. Also, plot is secondary. In other words, with this short attention span, each moment needs to carry the film(good musicals fit the bill--ie. calamity jane--it doesn't matter if the residents can follow the story line, the singing and dancing keeps them entertained.) Also, it must not be juvenile; even though they are declining cognitively, many find this insulting. So cartoons tend to be out. While I love movies, my interest here is purely to find someone to help me. Unfortunately, when I clicked on help, it turns out no one will help you unless you have posted ten times. So, I hope someone can help me. It's not like I'm not willing to put my time in...I'm not selfish. I'm spending my time off trying to do something positive for my Alzheimer's residents. I hope to hear from someone!

i suppose you could do that, but i think movies like The Sound of Music work even if you don't really know what's going on or missed the first half. i hope that doesn't sound insulting. i just tend to think romantic musicals like this are entertaining on a completely different level than most other movies. same thing with My Fair Lady; actually, My Fair Lady even moreso because it's got such great costumes and sets.

A Guide for the Marreid Man has mild risque situations but moves fast, funny, and practically no plot, it is mostly brief sketches.

You might want to check out Danny Kaye's best movie, The Court Jester, to see if it has anything you would consider too intense. Alzheimer patients would probably love Danny Kaye (but not Jerry Lewis).

One movie you might want to consider: High School Musical - I've never seen it, but it might work. School of Rock is another maybe.
