Claude Miller R.I.P.

French film director Claude Miller passed away last Wednesday from a long illness.

Of course some of his best films were given Hollywood treatment. "Garde à vue" with Lino Ventura and Michel Serrault became "Suspicion" with Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman. "Mortelle randonnée" with Isabelle Adjani and Michel Serrault became "Eye of the beholder" with Ashely Judd and Ewan McGregor.

I think my favorite film of his is "A Secret" and the film he co-directed with his son, "I'm glad my mother is alive" but he's got a decent body of work with 21 films.

Luckily, he's still got one more film in the pipeline: "Thérèse Desqueyroux" starring Audrey Tautou will be released later in the fall.

I have to admit that I haven't seen that many of Miller's films. I liked Garde à vue but I haven't seen that for ages. Fresher in my mind are The Accompanist and The Little Thief, especially the latter where a teenage Charlotte Gainsbourg seemed especially attractive and vulnerable. The other thing which I strongly remember is that he plays a significant role in Truffaut's The Wild Child, so I suppose I like Miller on general principles because of his connection to Truffaut through that film and the fact that The Little Thief is based on a Truffaut story.
