Great list. I love that you included Albino Alligator and Birthday Girl, both underrated thrillers imo.

And Buffalo '66 is a wonderful film. I really like films about outsiders and oddballs and losers, and it's one of the best.

Boys Don't Cry is also a personal favorite. It haunts me.

Thanks. For me Hillary Swank is as good as they get. As untouchable as Merryl appears, I think Hillary can get there. Ok, back to posting more pics.

If you haven't allready, see the two documentaries on the real Aileen Woodros. You'll find them in my post on favorite documentaries.

Loved To Die For, Long Kiss Goodnight, Perfect Getaway, and Last Seduction.

Been meaning to watch In The Electric Mist. I have it in my queue, so I think I'll watch it very soon now that I'm reminded!

I actually saw the original doc first, and then the movie, about Wuornos. I'm a bit obsessed with her, actually. :D

Pacific Heights has Michael Keaton as the bad guy, right? I've wanted to see that movie for a while, as a Keaton fan.

There is another documentary on her, done about ten years later. Which documenary did you see?

If you love the Last Seduction you will love One False Move.
In the Electric Mist is made from the original James Lee Burke nove ( one of my favorite writers - have all his books ). Tommy Lee is good as David Robechou but that character came more to life in Alec Balwin's portrayal in Heaven's Prisoners ( written by the same author ).

Flesh and Bone, and Go, were both pretty decent. The Ice Harvest had some good humor. It was a pretty bleak dark comedy.

Oh, I'd add Four Rooms to the list, unless I missed it. Dark, twisted, and quirky for sure. :)

I would think The Silent Partner and Last Exit to Brooklyn would qualify in this category.

Donkey Punch, I am glad to see someone else has seen that movie, none of my friends have even heard of it (gotta get new friends). I grew up knowing the phrase donkey punch, but until I actually for some reason looked it up on the internet I had no idea that it was a real thing, I really thought that the person that told me about that was just making it up and that is how I found the movie, watched it and loved it lots of great gore.

Calling Last Exit To Brooklyn dark and twisted somehow doesn't seem enough. That's one of the few films I've seen, during which I felt I'd was just being pummelled, broken and beaten, before a final kick in the head and left for dead. Even brutal doesn't seem enough. Brilliant film, though. If you feel up to it, I'd recommend it.

I strongly agree with you. There is alo a movie called Bright Angel that I really liked but it's one of the few I can't get in dvd, so I still have both of them in VHS.
The one that I want even more is called The Challenge with Scott Glen, who plays a novice martial arts practisioner in Japan. I went through some of the same situations and can really identify with the character, but it doesn't seem that it's been ever released on dvd.

linespalsy 01-31-12 12:39 PM

Freaks, West of Zanzibar, The Golem, Polanski's Macbeth.

cinemaafficionado 01-31-12 12:43 PM

By the way, to gain more attention to these movies, I posted pics of most that I liked that were the lesser known to the general public than the great ones, which are also on my list and would probably be instantly recognizable just in print and some are also mentioned on other threads allready. `I've indexed movies into a
few categories that movie houses like Blockbuster don't use. For instance, I have a super action category and an action category as well as an ultra violent category, seperate from horror, which is also sub-categorized into horror and very good horror.

Keaton is really the only reason to watch it. He doesn't have too much screen time, but he steals the movie.

If I made a list of my own, it'd take forever, but I love that you included King of the Ants, U-Turn, Confessions, Ravenous, Red Rock West, and Romeo is Bleeding. All pretty under-acknowledged films IMO.

It was out last year(well on dvd-r) in the middle of the year, there was a limited edition(legal) release from MGM of Bright Angel.

Some I've enjoyed that can fall into any of the above title words:

I don't know about others but I certainly found the following two films especially dark:

(^ I prefer the book, was a lot darker but still the film was excellent)

Thanks for the above info. I'll see if I can get Bright Angel. Last year I got Last Exit To Brooklyn as soon as it came out on dvd. Innocence and Franklyn look like something I migt be interested in, innocence being my post traumatic stress disorder:p

It certainly qualifies, a lot more than Harold and Maude.

It is dark, twisted and quirky.

A black comedy.

Could not have said that better than Yoda did. It would be nice if you would be more selective Nausicaa, in the posts you put in my thread. I mean, try to keep it relative and within reason, unless you post just to get your post count up, in which case, the idle chat forum is much more appropriate, but don't mind me, I'm just keeping up the banter:D

Her posts are perfectly fine, if you ask me. It's not at all off-topic to have a little playful back-and-forth about the movies mentioned. And personally, I think it's way more conducive to enjoyment than a dozen posts of nothing but poster attachments. Be a little friendlier, yeah? People are using your thread, after all. That should be a positive thing.

People here don't usually care much about post counts, either. And when they do, they usually get them higher in one of the dozen or so threads more conducive to doing so.

I was initialy welcomed to this forum by Nausicaa with banter. Having spent some time here, I am now bantering back a little but I see what you mean, maybe I'm starting to banter a little too much and I do want to keep it friendly and stick to topic. Not a problem, I've had fist fights where afterwards we shook hands and had a drink together. No real malice intended.

On another note, if you are reffering to the pic attechments that I add to my list, it saddens me that you do not appreciate it, as I spend much more time fiding it and copying it and poisting it, then I do just typing. The reason I do it, is to give some people a clearer idea of the movie on the list ( and I presume that not everyone has seen everything that I list ) so that they may eventually take a look at that movie and perhaps enjoy it. This is my altruism but if you feel it's unnecessary or redondant,
you are the moderator and it is your forum, all you have to do is let me know.

quick question, have you seen said film and deeply dislike it? or is it the overall look of the film that wigs you out?

I just think it's somewhat unnecessary. I like the use of images and I'm not belittling your effort, but if you find yourself posting a couple dozen in a row, particularly separate from the lists, I'd say that's probably a little excessive. Most people sprinkle a few here and there and attach them to the same posts as the actual mentions. It makes it more pleasant to read. But if they're off by themselves, well, people can often just Google them themselves. It's putting it all together that I think has the most value.

No offense intended; I think you've got the right idea, just might want to moderate it a tad. :)

Re: Favorite dark, twisted, and quirky movies

i was gonna say that if you really want to spark in interest in people, why not jot down a few things about the movies you're mentioning along with the picture? why you love it, your memories of watching it for the first time, anything in particular that springs to mind.

I've seen it; I'm playing up my dislike for effect. :) I don't think it's a bad movie, though I sure don't love it. Part of my reaction is innate, in that I feel like any movie quirky enough is bound to attract die hard fans simply by virtue of it being quirky, though I wouldn't pretend to know if that describes any specific fan of the flick.

I was gonna go off on a whole thing explaining myself, but I should probably find a thread for it, since it gets a bit more in-depth. Anyone interested in a conversation where I try to explain why I don't like a film they love? :D

I'll second this. Lists are good in the right context, but I'm usually way more interested in why someone loves something, or why they chose it for a particular reason. That's the stuff that makes the posts special and worth reading: technically any one might list the same films, but they'll never have the exact same reasons for choosing them.

I agree and we might all become more knowledgable as a result of a fine review.
Having said that, I'd have to agree also that we all don't percieve things the same, as evident in different debates.( I don't know how many times someone's reccomended a restaurant to me that I thought sucked ).
The other point is there is only 24 hours in a day so for me it's more convenient to put out more and reach more people.
I find that most people that allready belong to movie forums have pretty much seen most of the same movies and then it's just a question of interpretation. My feeling is if you want to broaden your site base and recruit more movie fans it is even more helpful when you inform them of good movies that they haven't seen and would consequently see and join your forum and then come up with some movies that you haven't seen but would love to see. So, personaly I find lists very helpful; it's only a question of quality and the amount of time one needs to put them together.

Thanks. Actualy, if you look at my lists, you will see a posting pattern. I will post a bunch of pics immediately after, usually from that list, but pics I haven't seen posted before and mostly pics of lesser movies on the list to get most attention to those movies. Also the reason I do it like that is because I'm allowed to post only 5 images at at ime with the method I'm using and it takes quite a while, so sometimes I get disconnected from the thread I'm posting on. Do you find the method to my madness acceptable as a formula of interest?

I usually host my images at another site and use <img></img> tags to show them in my posts here. I used to use photobucket, which wasn't the greatest but works and is free, and I don't think it's necessarily all that much more work than your method. That way you can post as many as you want, too. FWIW I also prefer reading posts where the words and pictures are together, and feel that posting a bunch of consecutive picture-only comments tends to bury discussions (unless it's a thread mainly dedicated to sharing images, of course).

Believe it or not, I'm not much of an internet person and am not as profficient in the technical aspects of it. I have no clue what a photo bucket is. I would need someone to show me these things, that's why initialy I asked what is the quickest way to post an image is. I see people posting these huge images or clips from youtube. I got no clue. Can you show me how to do it? I don't even know how the URL thing works.

you can use "tags" to post images, links, or videos from other pages.
for example to post an image you wrap the image url (such as: http://www.princeton.edu/~ddunham/ci...books%2001.jpg ) between image tags <img></img> (but replacing the < and > with [ and ]).

the final result looks basically like this <img>http://www.princeton.edu/~ddunham/cinema/prosperos%20books%2001.jpg</img>. and when you use the square brackets it looks like this:

http://www.princeton.edu/~ddunham/ci...books%2001.jpg

a useful tip if you see something cool in someone else's post and want to know how they did it, just hit the quote button and it will show their entire post along with the tags and urls in visible text form.

here are a couple of things for you to try it out on.

I thought Montana was a pretty good little darkly comic gem about a hitwoman.

My cup of tea, thanks.

Great. I love introducing people to under-the-radar movies they might like. You and I have similar taste in crime thrillers, it seems. I'll try to think of some more.

Deadite 02-02-12 12:03 AM

Okay, here's some more:

Those are both pretty decent but I absolutele love this next one:

I like all of them. Things To Do In Denver When You Are Dead is one of my favorite Gangster movies.

Oh, I almost forgot Chopper! Great movie! Possibly Eric Bana's best performance.

Yes, definitely. Inside prison in Australia.

I was gonna go off on a whole thing explaining myself, but I should probably find a thread for it, since it gets a bit more in-depth. Anyone interested in a conversation where I try to explain why I don't like a film they love? :D
I like Harold and Maude, but it has a reputation for being a weird off the wall movie and it isn't. It has wacky externals, but it is essentially a sentimental fable with the kind of uplifting neatly wrapped up message they churned out each week on the Twilight Zone. You take out the fake suicides and the huge age difference between the protagonists and what's left is a very conventional story.

precisely. for me, i just think the two main leads are insanely cute/loveable. the awkwardness of Harold is always really sweet - i mean, okay, he's weird and unlike any person i'll probably ever meet, but i think the things he felt and the things he wanted are spot-on for their relateableness (i just made that word up, i know). as for Maude, she's just a lot of fun to watch. this movie makes me feel good because of Maude's incredible outlook on life, how she helps Harold to open up and understand this way of thinking, and watching Harold warm up to the first person who's ever given him any coddling in his life is just a heartbreaker for me.

i can see people liking this strictly for its quirks and all the silly death/suicide bits alone, but this movie is so much more than that. and i don't think it'd have much of a fan base if it wasn't - there's too many films that try to do what Harold and Maude does and fail. but this one is the cult classic.

I identified with Harold quite a bit, so you do know someone like him. Sort of. :)

Maybe this says something about me, but in high school I knew some people who were just as weird as Harold.

Nice choice, if you haven't seen it for some strange reason :p then Bronson is one to see, Tom Hardy is phenomenal in it:

After this and the wonderful Drive, I can't wait to see what Nicolas Winding Refn does with Logan's Run! - Well I heard he was directing this.

:yup: And that's what you call actual good banter. As for Harold and Maude - it was shoved on the television for me when I was about ten, I had no idea what I was watching then but loved it ever since. My Mum was a big fan of Ruth Gordon at the time but she didn't let me watch Rosemary's Baby at the same age, oh no.

Chopper made you think of Bronson. Good. What similiar prison movie comes to mind. - Killer: A Journal Of Murder, about Carl Penzram, most likely one of the first serial killers of the twentieth cenutry. The book was better, not to take anything away from James Woods' wonderfull performance. Of, course, he looked nothing like him. Panzram in real life bears an uncanny resemblemce to someone on this forum.

Of course it would have to be Donnie Darko!

I remember starting to watch this movie. I know it has somewhat of a cult following. I just couldn't get into it. That's why it's not allready on my list.

Re: Favorite dark, twisted, and quirky movies

I used to be a big fan of DD, but I lost some of my excitement for it after seeing that heavy-handed pretentious "director's cut" that was supposed to explain everything but only succeeded in robbing the film of its mystique.

I strongly recommend anyone interested to NOT watch the director's cut first, or it will likely ruin an otherwise very cool creepy experience.

Saw the superior original release cut first of Donnie Darko and loved it ever since, just don't go down the sequel route, rubbish and pointless.

Although one could say The Ogre is a war time movie, it is also dark and twisted.

cinemaafficionado 02-11-12 07:06 PM

I just loved Thursday. It was one of those movies that literally caught me off guard.
