The Scattergories Song Tournament

Scattergories will consist of songs that follow whatever theme or category the participating member chooses. The participating member will indicate what the theme of their songs are. There may not be 2 identical themes or categories. So, if two people want to select "Apples" as their theme, whoever posts their songs first gets through, the other will have to think of a different theme or category.

Please Note: There have been a lot of drop-outs from these tournaments recently, so if you're not planning to vote throughout the entire tournament, you're welcome to comment and join the discussion, but please don't join the tournament just to drop out later. It affects the flow of the tournament, and upsets the host.

Plus, due to the fact that it's unfair to the other members of the tournament, the new rule is that if you drop out, your songs will automatically be eliminated, and if necessary, whatever songs they're up against will get a free pass to the next round.

Rules:
All genres are eligible, with no limitations on genre as listed above. In addition, songs that are previous tournament winners and songs that are over 10 minutes long are NOT eligible.

I think it's safe to assume that everyone will be able to nominate at least eight songs, so you can start posting your nominations as soon as you join the tournament. Please keep your nominations in one post. You can edit your nominations up until the time the nominations close, but please make a new post to let everyone know that your nominations have changed.

Any song is allowed as long as you can provide a link to it. Everyone uses YouTube, but you can also link from other sites if you prefer, as long as they don't require anyone to sign up for the site to listen to the song.

To be fair to everyone, you must listen to both songs to vote. You must vote from the beginning of the tournament to continue voting throughout the tournament. Unless a tie-breaking vote is requested, anyone who hasn't voted consistently will not be allowed to vote in the final rounds.

If you have any questions, please ask.

Considering that the forum has MoFo's from across the globe, I will wait until tomorrow evening (when I get back from work) to start randomizing songs and kicking off the tourney. Hopefully we'll have at least 15 members by then.
Thanks gbg for the heads up!

Me neither! I'll think of one tomorrow. Time for bed here.
Keep those lists coming in. Can't wait to see your themes, MoFo's!
Goodnight...

Swan 03-03-16 01:17 AM

I was having trouble naming my theme, even though I knew what I was going for. I PM'd mojofilter with three words to help describe the mood. He gave me a fantastic "theme title" to go with in response. Thanks dude!

Basically, this is music that is in your face and visceral. I think all music makes you have some sort of emotional response, and these songs/artists represent the "negative" extremes on the emotion/mood spectrum. It is music people often hate for being so abrasive. Words like anger, grime, depression, trashy, help give an idea of what I'm going for. The perfect music to listen to on a rainy night... while lying in the gutter next to a dark alleyway full of garbage.

My theme is...

The Grimy, the Abrasive, and the Filthy

We need 128 songs to have a proper tournament, so if we don't get enough songs, Mojo will have to figure out how to bring the total to 128 songs. That usually means giving each person an extra song or two, so you might get a chance to use them, but there's no guarantee.

I'm curious how these will differ from mine? Aren't we supposed to pick themes that are different from other peoples? I feel like you guys just took my theme and gave it a different name.

I am really pushing for variety with this tournament. I think we should be conscious of our themes and try to do stuff that is different and unique from what's been done. I don't mean to tell you guys what to do, if I have to be the one to change my theme - as much as I don't want to - I will.

Especially with the dark, angry music. If it was just me I'd be game, of course, but I know that kind of music might turn some people off of the tournament, and I don't want that to happen.

That doesn't make it a different theme. If somebody else picked your theme first, you should pick a different theme, not just rename it and duplicate his theme.

I would love that, but when we did country music a while back, everyone nominated old country music, like Patsy Cline and Merle Haggard. Non-country music fans don't seem to realize that there's been country music through the years, and there's still country music today, and some of it is even better than the old songs.

I missed that. Maybe it could be for Country music 1970 to today. I dunno. That sucks, though.

Swan 03-03-16 02:24 AM

I think Destiny is setting a really good example with her theme ideas (I noticed you posted US Cities and clothing). One of the neat things about this tournament is how creative we can be with our themes. It could be really fun and varied. They can be specific and still be something that resonates with us. I know mine is kind of lame but it was the theme I had in mind when I suggested an Emotion Song Tournament.

That would work for us, but I don't know if anyone else here would join, or even be able to find songs to nominate.

There were some amazing country songs in the 80's and early 90's.

I agree. I think cities was a perfect example of the way a theme tournament should be done. Clothing is another great example. Also, if Citizen Rules does his foods theme, that was a great idea too.

Other ideas include things like transportation, colors, etc.

SilentVamp 03-03-16 02:34 AM

I said I wasn't going to do another one for awhile, but I might as well join this one, too.

My theme will be the four seasons.

Thank you, and I do like your theme. I also agree that the others need to go in another direction. When I scroll through my Zune music, I come up with a lot of ideas . . .

Dwight Yoakam ~ Guitars, Cadillacs
Billy Joel ~ The Piano Man
Johnny Lee ~ Cherokee Fiddle

Dwight Yoakam ~ Guitars, Cadillacs
Prince ~ Little Red Corvette
John Denver ~ On a Jet Plane

Come on guys, I know we are all too creative. ;)

Swan 03-03-16 02:44 AM

I decided to change my theme, not because of the Derek or ATC, just because I started thinking I could be a little more creative.

So I'm going to change my theme to Animals.

Bon Iver - The Wolves (Act I and II)

St. Vincent - Rattlesnake
The Roots - Baby (humans are animals, too ;))
Micachu and the Shapes - Vulture
The Rolling Stones - Stray Cat Blues
Feist - Sealion
Clark - Snowbird
Flying Lotus - Camel

Those are great ideas, and I will be listening to your list in a moment. I don't actually know a lot of those songs, so that makes this a lot more interesting.

It's a shame The Monkees are referring to people, when they sing Star Collector. :p I love that song. It's pretty much my favorite song from them.

Of course I also love Mary, Mary.

. . . and Mary, Mary . . .

Wait, that's not them.

That's actually another idea, possibly. Names, people in general, etc . . .

I could seriously do this all night. :D

16 people with 8 songs each would be 128 songs in the tournament.

Ðèstîñy 03-03-16 03:38 AM

That's a great list, Derek. It reminds me of a favorite song I have right now. I'm not sure how popular Gwyneth Paltrow is around here. Her singing, that is. I think she's great . . .

I sure hope I have that number accurate. CiCi will join. Chyp is now on, and will hopefully join in. If Christine joins in, then we are set.

I'm in and my category will be family. I'm at work, it's 9.15am so won't be able to do my list till this afternoon/evening.

gbgoodies 03-03-16 05:18 AM

I decided my theme will be "Songs about Heaven and Angels". I'll edit my post on the first page with my song list later.

Count me in but I've no idea what my theme might be, I'll have to work on that and try to come up with something when the brain is more in gear (late night last night and a late start this morning).

I can just as easily un-join if you want hun ;)

Chypmunk 03-03-16 06:34 AM

Ok - assuming Lisa doesn't prefer I back out in order to perhaps let her keep one of her excess allowance (can you spell the word 'greedy' hun? ;)) - I shall go somewhat lateral in thinking with my theme and choose Fred Astaire. Why is that lateral you may ask ..... well all will become apparent when I put my list of nominations up ..... later.

Fred Astaire! looking forward to that one!
So how many songs do we have each? 10?

Just the eight for now - nice try though ;)

christine 03-03-16 07:02 AM

Re: The Scattergories Song Tournament

eight, dammit not enough!
Mojo can you edit your first post and write in who is taking part and their category and eventually their song links. I often refer back to that when I want to replay a song, it's much easier to go back to the first post than to trawl through pages
ta!

You know better than that. Just give up two of your songs. :p

That all depends on how many songs Chyp gives up. ;)

That only worked because I hadn't scrolled the page down far enough. You booby!

I just looked, and I found out by comparing the lists, that Honeykid, Hubby, and Cricket aren't in this set. If we all drop one song each, that would be seven songs for each of us, and the two of them, and then 2 songs to start, for the third person. I will give up another song, as well, to make it six for me, and three for that person. Is this how we fix the problem, or what exactly? I've only been in two tournaments, so far, so I'm a little lost.

Can you tell I feel bad about this?!?

Omnizoa 03-03-16 08:28 AM

Yep! Sixteen members, times the eight songs each, is the 128 songs needed. We shared some songs last time with Tugg, although I didn't get back in time to do that for him. I would have, though, and I will now, for these others. I'll feel bad, if they miss out.

cricket 03-03-16 08:44 AM

I'll take a break from this one:)

Gatsby 03-03-16 09:36 AM

Satire and Humor

The Police - On Any Other Day
Beck - Satan Gave Me a Taco
Tom Lehrer - The Masochism Tango
Allan Sherman - Hello Muddah Hello Faddah
Fishbone - Another Generation
Weird Al Yankovic - Like a Surgeon
The Replacements - Gary's Got a Boner
The Smiths - The Queen is Dead

Hey MoFo's! I am at work now and will not be able to update anything or post my list until around 6 p.m. Eastern Time!

My theme will be Weather-related songs, so if anybody decides to do it now, too late!

Somebody will have to explain how many members and how many songs each will allow the tourney to function correctly.
Remember, empowering the host to improve and do right will make it a great experience for all 😃

"Devil in a Blue Dress", Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels
"Zoot Suit Riot", Cherry Poppin' Daddies

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

Good Lord, people. I posted right above all this, that all we have to do, is give up one song each. We'll have seven songs each, instead of eight. That way, Cricket and one other member can join in. Honey and Hubby haven't been on to say if they'd like to join. If they do, I am sure we can make this work, without anyone needing to bail.
