Mojo Filter's Top 50 Male Solo Artists
Following my list of Top 50 Bands, I've decided to explore my Top 50 Male Solo Artists who have entertained and inspired me throughout my life. The list includes singers from across many genres: pop, rock, folk, rap, R&B, and soul. I will feature my favorite songs, and, occasionally, the top album pick for each artist. Hope you enjoy! Here goes... 50. JOE JACKSON http://veneratomaestrooppure.files.w...oe-jackson.jpgI was introduced to English new wave singer Joe Jackson at a very early age. My family owned a record album of his, 1982's Night And Day, and that was how I got exposed to his cool music. My favorite songs: Is She Really Going Out With Him? Re: Mojo Filter's Top 50 Male Solo Artists
Interesting idea for a list. I'm not sure if I could count 20 male solo singers that I like, let alone 50, but I appreciate your efforts.
I hope to see Don Henley somewhere on your list since Glenn Frey has already made an appearance. |
I thought you had Ed Sheeran at # 50 and Joe Jackson at #48. Now you have Joe Jackson at #50 and Glenn Frey at #48. Am I remembering wrong or did you change your #50 and #48 artists?
|
46. JIMI HENDRIX http://www.musiclipse.com/wp-content...er-desktop.jpg Arguably the best guitarist in rock history, Jimi also was an accomplished singer whose songs play like classic anthems. My favorite songs: All Along The Watchtower Foxy Lady The Wind Cries Mary Hey Joe Purple Haze https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjwWjx7Cw8I |

I did. I was still working on my list. Sadly, some artists lost their spot in favor of other worthy artists. Sorry for the confusion. The rest of the list is intact. |

I hope to see Don Henley somewhere on your list since Glenn Frey has already made an appearance. I'm actually planning on posting my Top Female Solo Artists after I wrap this one up. I had more than 50 artists that I listed originally, but narrowed it down to that number. What can I say? I am a huge music fanatic! Stick around... |

Your not hitting on my faves yet but you listen to a whole lot more music than me. Don't think I could do a male solo list this big. Glad goodies mentioned the switch-a-roo. I thought I was losing it.
|
Browne's Somebody's Baby is probably my favorite song from all the artists so far. They're all good, but I'm not that keen on Money.
|

Eddie Money is my favourite out of the list so far, but he's only got about three songs that I really love.

I know some might think I've committed a crime by placing him just south of my Top 40, but I haven't thoroughly explored his catalog. If I revisit this list a few years from now, Ray might be somewhere in my Top 30. Re: Mojo Filter's Top 50 Male Solo Artists
Sorry MoFo's, had to do another switch on my list.
Number 46, which was originally Lebanese folk singer Marcel Khalife, has been replaced with American legend Jimi Hendrix. I figured I'd compile a list of strictly internationally renowned artists. That will be the last switch...promise :) |
30. GEORGE MICHAEL http://zort.ru/media/uploads/images/...eMichael5.jpeg After leaving Wham, George went from pure pop to a more serious lyricist and singer. 29. TUPAC SHAKUR http://images5.fanpop.com/image/phot...8-1024-768.jpgIn the 90's, I was into the alternative rock scene and despised hip-hop. The only hip-hop artist I had any respect for was 2pac. 27. ROBBIE WILLIAMS http://img0.gtsstatic.com/wallpapers...3f5_large.jpegIn the 90's, I was a fan of English boy band Take That. When Robbie left the band in 1995, and released his debut solo album in 1997, I, out of curiosity, bought it and instantly became hooked on his melodic tunes. 24. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-A1nWrTpj1I...Timberlake.jpgIf you asked me 15 years ago, I would definitely have dismissed Justin Timberlake as nothing but a member of a manufactured boy band and one of the reasons why music was terrible in the late 90's and throughout the early 2000's. However, after ditching N' Sync, JT collaborated with respected producer Timbaland to produce some of the greatest pop records of the century. Timberlake surprisingly turned out to be a talented singer, songwriter and actor, and a cool guy altogether. I never heard of Williams or Jones. |

I never heard of Williams or Jones. Williams is huge worldwide except in the US, where he had one or 2 hits in the late 90's before dropping off the radar here. Jones was a huge pop star in the 80's. Surprised you never heard of him. |
20. TOM PETTY http://cdn-images.9cloud.us/886/picc...729.1680x0.jpgAlthough most of his songs were released with his band, the Heartbreakers, Tom Petty made only a few albums solo. But many people consider his entire catalog, including his material with the band, his own since he wrote all the songs himself. Petty is by far one of the coolest American rockers in history. My favorite songs: Free Fallin' I Won't Back Down Runnin' Down A Dream Wildflowers Time To Move On You Wreck Me Saving Grace You Don't Know How It Feels https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TlBTPITo1I |

Re: Mojo Filter's Top 50 Male Solo Artists
Some great choices. Howard Jones was a bit of a surprise. I loved him when I was a kid but haven't listened to him in a long time.
Tom Petty, on the other hand, has been my favorite artist since I was eight years old. Great choice, but of course I think he ought to be about 19 places higher. |

15. DAVID BOWIE http://deerwaves.com/wp-content/uplo...vid-bowie-.jpgBowie's music, like the guy himself, is out-of-this-world. It's always been an acquired taste for me. 12. EMINEM http://www.konbini.com/fr/files/2013/04/262685.jpgStraight from the slums of Detroit to international superstardom, Marshall Mathers (a.k.a. Eminem), discovered by rap mogul Dr. Dre, has made an everlasting mark on pop culture with his genius rhymes and rap style. He's been described as the Bob Dylan of rap in that his songs are deeply personal, and more often ranging from funny to extremely dark and vulgar, and speak to an entire generation. He is by far my favorite rapper of all time, even topping such rap icons as 2pac, Snoop Dogg, and Notorious B.I.G. My favorite songs: Dirty Laundry Love Rules The Boys Of Summer Leather And Lace Not Enough Love In The World The Heart Of The Matter New York Minute The Garden Of Allah Taking You Home Everything Is Different Now The End Of The Innocence https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkwCLaPPyO4 |

If Eminem is the highest positioned rap artist on this list, you're going to break my heart.

Here's a recap of Numbers 50 - 11 50. JOE JACKSON 49. CHUCK BERRY 48. GLENN FREY 47. AL GREEN 46. JIMI HENDRIX 45. JACKSON BROWNE 44. BUDDY HOLLY 43. EDDIE MONEY 42. SAM COOKE 41. RAY CHARLES 40. STING 17. BOB DYLAN 16. STEVIE WONDER 15. DAVID BOWIE 14. GEORGE HARRISON 13. PRINCE 12. EMINEM 11. DON HENLEY Top 10 will begin shortly! |
10. NOEL GALLAGHER http://estereolobby.com/wp-content/u...-Gallagher.jpgEven though he's only been doing solo work since 2011, former Oasis guitarist, occasional lead singer, and the songwriter of the vast majority of the band's songs including all the classics, Noel Gallagher appears in my Top 10, and he will continue to rise up my list as he keeps making more albums. So far, he's released 2 albums, that in my opinion are 2 of the best rock albums this decade. Noel's knack for writing infectious tunes, soaring choruses, and moving lyrics hasn't missed a beat. My favorite songs: The Death Of You And Me A.K.A. Broken Arrow If I Had A Gun Dream On (Stranded On) The Wrong Beach In The Heat Of The Moment The Dying Of The Light Where The Song Remains The Same The Ballad Of The Mighty I The Right Stuff You Know We Can't Go Back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOkkZmgNiQ0 |

Sadly for you, he is :) I'm not much of a rap fan, and I consider Eminem to be a rockstar rapper, if that ever existed. 2pac is a far more superior rapper than Eminem, but in terms of my personal favorites, Eminem is superior. When I compiled my list, I took many things into consideration: how often I listen to the artist, how many albums of the artist do I own...etc. |
9. BRYAN ADAMS http://img0.ndsstatic.com/wallpapers...682_large.jpegThe first vinyl record album I ever remember purchasing myself was at the age of 7 in 1984; the album was Reckless by Canadian rock star Bryan Adams. Since then, I've been a loyal fan, and my love and admiration for Mr. Adams has never faded. In my opinion, he's the most overlooked rock star of our time, and one of the greats. My favorite songs: This Time Cuts Like A Knife Straight From The Heart Summer Of '69 One Night Love Affair Heaven Run To You It's Only Love Heat Of The Night Thought I'd Died And Gone To Heaven Do I Have To Say The Words? Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman? Please Forgive Me Let's Make A Night To Remember Star Back To You On A Day Like Today Somebody https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqhELBUdYqM |
8. LIONEL RICHIE http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-t3e2jtlHAp...nel-richie.jpgI've been a huge fan of Lionel Richie ever since I learned how to talk. My parents were fans, so I grew up dancing and singing along with his groovy songs. Lionel is one of the smoothest and coolest performers the world has ever seen. My favorite songs: Truly You Are My Love Running With The Night Stuck On You Penny Lover Dancing On The Ceiling Say You, Say Me Do It To Me My Destiny Time Just For You All Night Long (All Night) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqAvFx3NxUM |
7. PAUL MCCARTNEY http://www.hdpaperwall.com/wp-conten...s-1024x680.jpgAside from making up one-half of the greatest songwriting partnerships in history, and being a former member of the greatest band that ever walked the earth, Paul McCartney achieved huge success as a solo artist, and then with Wings, even though I've always considered Wings to be Paul's solo project rather than a legitimate band, right after The Beatles broke up. More than 50 years on, and at the age of 73, Paul is still releasing albums and selling out tours, bless his heart. My favorite songs: Maybe I'm Amazed Junk Another Day Hi, Hi, Hi Band On The Run Silly Love Songs Mull Of Kintyre Coming Up Say, Say, Say Pipes Of Peace The Girl Is Mine Hope Of Deliverance Young Boy Beautiful Night Great Day Somedays Fine Line Dance Tonight Ever Present Past Vintage Clothes My Valentine (I Want To) Come Home Early Days Appreciate Everybody Out There New https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkbbP0ozyMs |

6. ELTON JOHN http://img.thesoundla.com/wp-content...Feat-Image.jpgElton John has been around for what feels like an eternity, and he's had a countless number of classic songs. My favorite songs: Your Song Rocket Man Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters Tiny Dancer Crocodile Rock Daniel Bennie And The Jets Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny) I'm Still Standing Sacrifice The One Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me Can You Feel The Love Tonight I Want Love I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6KYAVn8ons |
All great ones now except I don't care about Eminem

Re: Mojo Filter's Top 50 Male Solo Artists
Sorry, guys, don't kill me. I made another switch
Number 30 is no longer Rick Springfield. George Michael takes his place. Rick drops to Number 51. I know what you're thinking. Thank God I'm not a real critic :D I'm rushing through this list. I'll be posting Numbers 5 and 4 tonight. Top 3 will wait for tomorrow :) |
5. CAT STEVENS http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_rKtIBJK3Ii.../s1600/cat.bmpI was first introduced to Cat Stevens, or Yusuf Islam as he has been known since converting to Islam in the late 70's, in my early teens when my father played the song Father And Son to me. I was moved by the lyrics, and Stevens' distinctive and amazing voice. Many years later, I made a thorough exploration into his back catalog, and discovered amazingly thought-provoking deep-meaning acoustic songs that instantly became the soundtrack of my life. My favorite songs: Matthew And Son The First Cut Is The Deepest I Love My Dog I'm Gonna Get Me A Gun Lady D'Arbanville Father And Son Sad Lisa Miles From Nowhere If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out Bitterblue If I Laugh The Wind Hard Headed Woman Where Do The Children Play Oh Very Young The Beloved (Yusuf Islam) God Is The Light (Yusuf Islam) Roadsinger (Yusuf Islam) Dying To Live (Yusuf Islam) Gold Digger (Yusuf Islam) Don't Be Shy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOOPPO91t2Q |
4. PHIL COLLINS http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JvJQPtFkHy...lins-front.jpgI don't know anybody who was born and raised into the 80's who is not a fan of Phil Collins. He made songs that ranged from pure pop ballads to dark and heavy to thought-provokingly deep. He is by far one of the greatest British musicians that ever lived. My favorite songs: In The Air Tonight You Can't Hurry Love I Don't Care Anymore Easy Lover Long Long Way To Go Don't Lose My Number Inside Out One More Night We Said Hello Goodbye Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now) Two Hearts Another Day In Paradise I Wish It Would Rain Down Father To Son Do You Remember? Find A Way To My Heart That's Just The Way It Is Dance Into The Light True Colors Take Me Home https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRY1NG1P_kw |
Ill be posting my Top 3 later on today, and concluding yet another list 😅

3. BILLY JOEL http://fanart.tv/fanart/music/64b942...0c2dad9ab7.jpgThe Piano Man has been making the world feel alright for 5 decades, with a career that is rich with brilliant classics and an impressive body of work. I've been a fan of Billy ever since I was a young boy in the 80's, and it wasn't until recently that I dove deeper into his back catalog. I was also fortunate to see him live last year, in what became one of the best concerts I have ever attended. My favorite songs: Piano Man The Entertainer Say Goodbye To Hollywood Streetlife Serenader Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway) Tomorrow Is Today Vienna Scenes From An Italian Restaurant She's Got A Way Movin' Out (Anthony's Song) She's Always A Woman My Life All For Leyna Don't Ask Me Why Allentown Uptown Girl Tell Her About It A Matter Of Trust We Didn't Start The Fire And So It Goes The River Of Dreams Downeaster Alexa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVlDSzbrH5M |
2. MICHAEL JACKSON http://www.fondosblackberry.com/user...-beginning.jpg The first solo artist I fell in love with, the one and only King of Pop. Seriously, who wasn't obsessed with Michael Jackson back in the 80's and beyond? The moonwalk. The songs. The groundbreaking music videos. The red zippered jacket. The glove. The hat. Michael Jackson was truly the perfect embodiment of a complete entertainer. Growing up, I remember vividly dressing up like him and imitating his dance moves in the Beat It and Thriller videos. But, yet again, who didn't do that? My favorite songs: Rock With You Don't Stop Til You Get Enough Working Day And Night Off The Wall Billie Jean Beat It Human Nature Baby Be Mine The Lady In My Life Say Say Say Man In The Mirror Liberian Girl Dirty Diana Black Or White Who Is It Jam Will You Be There Dangerous Scream Stranger In Moscow They Don't Care About Us D.S. Blood On The Dancefloor You Rock My World Break Of Dawn Whatever Happens Hold My Hand Behind The Mask Love Never Felt So Good Smooth Criminal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_D3VFfhvs4 |
It's nice to see Billy Joel ranked so high on your list. He's one of my favorite singers too. I've seen him in concert a bunch of times, and he's amazing to see live. He's great at making sure that everyone has a great time at his shows, even if you're sitting in the cheap seats.

1. JOHN LENNON http://www.culturamas.es/wp-content/...D-1024x576.jpg Even though John Lennon's solo career only lasted for a short 10 years before he was tragically killed in 1980, his legacy as the founder of the greatest band that ever walked the earth in The Beatles, the man who represents one half of the greatest songwriting partnerships in history (the other half being Paul McCartney), and an outspoken advocate for world peace propelled him to the top. His solo work, even though flawed at times, was rich with brilliant masterpieces and timeless classics. His songs ranged from love ballads to socially and politically charged anthems to deeply personal songs. My favorite songs: Give Peace A Chance Isolation Hold On Mother Well Well Well Imagine How? Jealous Guy Gimme Some Truth Oh My Love The Luck Of The Irish Only People What You Got Nobody Loves You (When You're Down And Out) Old Dirt Road Woman Watching The Wheels I'm Losing You Cleanup Time Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy) I'm Stepping Out Nobody Told Me Real Love Grow Old With Me Instant Karma https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3qvosHHcWc |

Not the biggest fan of Cat Stevens, but I'm in the minority and you certainly have great taste. Good job finishing up your countdown!
|
As for Billy Joel, your favorite song list didn't even include my two favorites-The Stranger and Just the Way You Are. It just goes to show how many great songs he has.
|
I love this list of yours! Great choices. Many would be on my list, too. My only major difference is that I wouldn't have Buddy Holly that low. I just love that man too much and he has to be higher. Also, I loved seeing Neil Diamond and Sam Cooke on here. :)
But based on some of your choices, I am surprised that you don't have Jim Croce on the list. He would definitely be on mine. But how do you feel about him? |

I actually started off the list with him at 50, but then decided to go with Joe Jackson instead. I've only recently began listening to Croce, thanks to Quentin Tarantino featuring his amazing song I Got A Name in Django Unchained, and haven't fully become familiar with his song catalog. He's an incredible singer and songwriter, though. |

I know some might think I've committed a crime by placing him just south of my Top 40, but I haven't thoroughly explored his catalog. If I revisit this list a few years from now, Ray might be somewhere in my Top 30.
