Folk Song Tournament
Here are our 12 Players
Skepsis Sexy Celebrity Derek Gbgoodies Christine Miss Vicky Theo Jiraffejustin R.P. McMurphy Cricket Swan Godoggo With 12 people everyone gets 10 nominations and 8 people get 11. Just go ahead and do your 10 for now and if one more person pops in and says they want to join they can have the remaining eight nominations. If no one does then we will figure that out later. I'm not starting this until Sunday (possible Sat.) but I want everyone to get their nominations in and everything ironed out before this weekend so we don't get off to a late start. If your wondering if a song is Folk or not, these links will help you: List of Folk Singers Article on Folk Music Or you can look it up on Wiki or ask in this thread for our opinion. You can post your nominations when your ready. :) Try to have them in by Friday. |
Re: Folk Song Tournament
I'll get mine in when I get home. Probably in an hour or so. I'll have to figure out a couple of more since I only picked 8 so far.
|
Edited to add the links. Please note that I changed one song, and a few of the artists have been changed.
Please let me know if that's okay. Arlo Guthrie - City of New Orleans Peter, Paul and Mary - Puff The Magic Dragon Crosby, Stills Nash & Young - Teach Your Children Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Johnny Cash, Ricky Skaggs - Will The Circle Be Unbroken The Byrds - Turn, Turn, Turn John Denver - Leaving on a Jet Plane Judy Collins - Both Sides Now The Kingston Trio - Where Have All The Flowers Gone Bob Dylan = Blowin’ in the Wind Neil Diamond - Mr. Bojangles |
Right, I'm a little hazy on what exactly constitutes folk music, so I'm more or less going strictly by what Wikipedia tells me is. Let me know if you have any objections to these.
Andrew Bird - Oh No Bob Dylan - Song to Woody Bon Iver - Skinny Love Cat Stevens - Father and Son Donovan - Catch the Wind Nickel Creek - Reasons Why Sarah Jarosz - Ring Them Bells Sara Watkins - You & Me Dave Van Ronk - Green, Green Rocky Road Punch Brothers - No Concern of Yours Oscar Isaac - The Death of Queen Jane |
Re: Folk Song Tournament
Cricket's list is really Rock/Pop or Folk Rock as is a few of gbgoodies' but I think that's going to be par for the course. Once you electrify or have more than 3 or 4 chords to a song you start moving away from what's considered Folk IMHO.
|
Re: Folk Song Tournament
Derek Vinyard's Nominations :
Bob Dylan - Knockin on Heaven's Door Simon & Garkunfel - Mrs.Robinson The Byrds - Mr.Tambourine Man I got you, Babe - Sonny and Cher Mungo Jerry - In The Summertime Stealers Wheel - Stuck In The Middle With You Van Morrison - Moondance Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy Man Neil Young - Heart Of Gold The Everly Brothers - All I Have to Do Is Dream Doc Watson - Amazing Grace |

That's why I posted my list before taking the time to find the links. I looked at a whole bunch of lists of folk music, and picked the songs that I like from those lists, so all of my songs came from folk music lists online. But I want to make sure that they're okayed here as well. Once I know that all the songs are okayed, I'll add the links. |

Great. I'll add the links in a little while. (As soon as I finish watching the Robin Williams tribute special from PBS last night.) |

I didn't know what to nominate either, so I just started searching through sites about folk music looking for artists and songs that I recognized. |

Nominate this, not that it's Folk really. Great lyrics too. |

Re: Folk Song Tournament
I've switched out Joni Mitchell - A Case of You, Peter, Paul & Mary - Early in the Morning and Simon & Garfunkel - April Come She Will, so those are up for grabs if anyone wants 'em. Think I'm happy with my ballot now.
|
here's mine.
Amália Rodrigues Fado Português example of Portuguese Fado music - tradtionally melancholic haunting songs of loss, sung by one of the most famous singers Great Voices of Bulgaria Womens Choir - Pilentze Pee I heard these women on tv a while back and their voices stopped me in my tracks. I think it's beautiful, not sure what you'll think but gonna give it a chance! The next two are songs from my home town Liverpool, sung by the sailors a lot in pubs. You always used to get them sung at closing time :) The Spinners - the Leaving of Liverpool The Spinners - Maggie May The Dubliners and the Pogues - Irish Rover Thought I'd put up this live version where you can actually see Shane MacGowan standing up looking relatively normal! Rapalje - Raggle Taggle Gipsy this one's a real multinational one - a Scottish song sung by a Dutch Celtic band. Billy Bragg and Kirsty McColl - New England Billy Bragg wrote this, but I like this version with the much missed Kirsty McColl singing with him. Suo Gan - Charlotte Church Traditional Welsh lullaby sung by the young Charlotte Church The Strawbs - Part of the Union very reminiscent of the 70s folk rock sound Ewan McColl and Peggy Seeger - Sweet Thames Flow Softly Ewan McColl is the dad of the above Kirsty I've added a sea shanty Johnny Collins - Leave Her Johnny |
Anyone need a song? Here's a good one and it's even live.

Re: Folk Song Tournament
I think Folk Rock can be a fuzzy area and a host of music that can't be defined by other genres gets thrown into it. It's also not really Folk. It's like how Hard Rock, Prog Rock, etc. isn't Rock and Roll. They share a name because because one branched out from another but they're separate genres.
|
I know what you're saying VFN, but I don't know that there's much to do about it. A lot of people who grew up listening to Elvis didn't think The Stones were Rock 'N' Roll. Music just evolves. New country doesn't sound anything like old country either. I don't have a clue personally how to classify it; that's why I looked up all my songs.

No, Moondance isn't Irish folk; it's not even close but it sounds close enough to the 70's type of folk.
There are songs that are probably just the other side of folk being nominated but as long as there not so far off as to be ridiculous, I'm not going to be that hard about it. I would rather a few iffy songs get in than to suck the fun out of this by nitpicking. As long as the majority is really folksy, I'm happy. |
Re: Folk Song Tournament
This is Godoggo's tournament. Let her decide. If she wants anyone's opinion she'll ask for it.
|
So I guess we are just waiting for R.P to nominate his, JJ to add his links and me to finish mine which were almost done but apparently I screwed up and lost most of my nominations.
It doesn't look like we are getting another player, so I need three people to volunteer to only get ten noms. sexy already said he didn't want eleven so I'm counting him. Theo already accidentally nominated 11 and this is his first tournament so I'll let him go with 11. |
