Folk Song Tournament

Here are our 12 Players

Skepsis
Sexy Celebrity

Gbgoodies

Miss Vicky

With 12 people everyone gets 10 nominations and 8 people get 11. Just go ahead and do your 10 for now and if one more person pops in and says they want to join they can have the remaining eight nominations. If no one does then we will figure that out later.

I'm not starting this until Sunday (possible Sat.) but I want everyone to get their nominations in and everything ironed out before this weekend so we don't get off to a late start.

If your wondering if a song is Folk or not, these links will help you:

List of Folk Singers

Article on Folk Music

Or you can look it up on Wiki or ask in this thread for our opinion.

You can post your nominations when your ready. :) Try to have them in by Friday.

Please let me know if that's okay.

Right, I'm a little hazy on what exactly constitutes folk music, so I'm more or less going strictly by what Wikipedia tells me is. Let me know if you have any objections to these.

Andrew Bird - Oh No
Bob Dylan - Song to Woody
Bon Iver - Skinny Love
Cat Stevens - Father and Son
Donovan - Catch the Wind
Nickel Creek - Reasons Why
Sarah Jarosz - Ring Them Bells

Oscar Isaac - The Death of Queen Jane

Re: Folk Song Tournament

Cricket's list is really Rock/Pop or Folk Rock as is a few of gbgoodies' but I think that's going to be par for the course. Once you electrify or have more than 3 or 4 chords to a song you start moving away from what's considered Folk IMHO.

Derek Vinyard 09-10-14 10:47 PM

Re: Folk Song Tournament

Van Morrison - Moondance

That's why I posted my list before taking the time to find the links. I looked at a whole bunch of lists of folk music, and picked the songs that I like from those lists, so all of my songs came from folk music lists online. But I want to make sure that they're okayed here as well.

Once I know that all the songs are okayed, I'll add the links.

If yes, I'll add the links ASAP.

City of New Orleans - Steve Goodman
Puff The Magic Dragon - Peter, Paul and Mary
Teach Your Children - Crosby, Stills Nash & Young
Can The Circle Be Unbroken - Carter Family
Turn, Turn, Turn - The Byrds (Pete Seeger)
Alice’s Restaurant - Arlo Guthrie
Both Sides Now - Joni Mitchell
Where Have All The Flowers Gone - The Kingston Trio
Blowin’ in the Wind - Bob Dylan
Mr. Bojangles - Jerry Jeff Walker
Most of those are really folksy, so cool. The only one I was iffy on was Mr. BoJangles, but I looked it up and it's classified as folk. Plus the more I think about it the more folksy it becomes to me. Plus I love that song. So yeah, you're good.

It's written by a folk singer and preformed by a band that sometimes preforms folkish type music but that particular song isn't listed as folk.

Everybody knows that song. What is everyone else's opinion about it? It's pretty hard to be folk to me but I'll take everyone's else's opinion into consideration.

I've nominated an indie folk song (my cowboy junkies one) I want to have a lot of different type of folk so I'm fine with it.

I'm happy I did this tournament. I think just about everyone has nominated a song I really love.

It's got folk instruments in it, has an Irish folk quality but it's also performed more as Punk. Punk Folk I'd call it.

I'm really hoping to get that 13th person to take eight nominations. That will take away the risk of running into a tie every round.

I really didn't recognize anything, though. I recognized a lot of stuff people had already nominated, but by then it was too late to nominate it myself. I'm not much of a music person, despite the several Song Tournament wins I've had.

Re: Folk Song Tournament

I've switched out Joni Mitchell - A Case of You, Peter, Paul & Mary - Early in the Morning and Simon & Garfunkel - April Come She Will, so those are up for grabs if anyone wants 'em. Think I'm happy with my ballot now.

christine 09-11-14 03:41 PM

here's mine.

Amália Rodrigues Fado Português
example of Portuguese Fado music - tradtionally melancholic haunting songs of loss, sung by one of the most famous singers

Great Voices of Bulgaria Womens Choir - Pilentze Pee
I heard these women on tv a while back and their voices stopped me in my tracks. I think it's beautiful, not sure what you'll think but gonna give it a chance!

The next two are songs from my home town Liverpool, sung by the sailors a lot in pubs. You always used to get them sung at closing time :)
The Spinners - the Leaving of Liverpool

The Spinners - Maggie May

The Dubliners and the Pogues - Irish Rover
Thought I'd put up this live version where you can actually see Shane MacGowan standing up looking relatively normal!

Rapalje - Raggle Taggle Gipsy
this one's a real multinational one - a Scottish song sung by a Dutch Celtic band.

Billy Bragg and Kirsty McColl - New England
Billy Bragg wrote this, but I like this version with the much missed Kirsty McColl singing with him.

Suo Gan - Charlotte Church

Traditional Welsh lullaby sung by the young Charlotte Church

The Strawbs - Part of the Union
very reminiscent of the 70s folk rock sound

Ewan McColl and Peggy Seeger - Sweet Thames Flow Softly
Ewan McColl is the dad of the above Kirsty

I've added a sea shanty

Johnny Collins - Leave Her Johnny

VFN 09-11-14 08:58 PM

I think Folk Rock can be a fuzzy area and a host of music that can't be defined by other genres gets thrown into it. It's also not really Folk. It's like how Hard Rock, Prog Rock, etc. isn't Rock and Roll. They share a name because because one branched out from another but they're separate genres.

cricket 09-11-14 10:01 PM

I know what you're saying VFN, but I don't know that there's much to do about it. A lot of people who grew up listening to Elvis didn't think The Stones were Rock 'N' Roll. Music just evolves. New country doesn't sound anything like old country either. I don't have a clue personally how to classify it; that's why I looked up all my songs.

I know Van Morrison is Irish but I can't see Moondance being described as Irish Folk. I may be wrong but I see it as a fusion of Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, Pop, Folk and more I suppose but it's not Folk or Irish Folk.

Yeah, I understand. I'm not sure how Folk is even really defined though a lot of what's been submitted is really in the overarching Rock/Popular category.

Yeah, the album Moondance may have Irish Folk influences or a song/s that can be deemed Irish Folk in some fashion, but the song Moondance is not Irish Folk. At least. not that i can see. I think Christine said she knows Irish Folk so maybe she can chime in.

cricket 09-11-14 10:41 PM

VFN is right; this is the link to the song itself-

Godoggo 09-12-14 12:10 AM

No, Moondance isn't Irish folk; it's not even close but it sounds close enough to the 70's type of folk.

There are songs that are probably just the other side of folk being nominated but as long as there not so far off as to be ridiculous, I'm not going to be that hard about it.

I would rather a few iffy songs get in than to suck the fun out of this by nitpicking. As long as the majority is really folksy, I'm happy.

Re: Folk Song Tournament

This is Godoggo's tournament. Let her decide. If she wants anyone's opinion she'll ask for it.

Godoggo 09-12-14 12:31 AM

So I guess we are just waiting for R.P to nominate his, JJ to add his links and me to finish mine which were almost done but apparently I screwed up and lost most of my nominations.

It doesn't look like we are getting another player, so I need three people to volunteer to only get ten noms. sexy already said he didn't want eleven so I'm counting him.

Theo already accidentally nominated 11 and this is his first tournament so I'll let him go with 11.

I'll stick with only 10 noms. :)

Godoggo 09-12-14 12:42 AM

O.k, thanks gbg. Two more volunteers to take ten.

Re: Folk Song Tournament

Added my links.

cricket 09-12-14 06:35 AM

I'm good with just the 10

Godoggo 09-12-14 12:15 PM

Thanks, Cricket. I'll go ahead and put RP down for ten as he doesn't have any nominated yet.

So I need JJ, Christine, Miss Vicky, Skepsis and Derek to add one more song.

Miss Vicky 09-12-14 12:17 PM

Re: Folk Song Tournament

Give me a minute

Godoggo 09-12-14 12:25 PM

Swan needs to add one too. I thought he had 11 but he just has one that takes up two lines. :)

Same with Theo, so both of them need to add a song.

Theo 09-12-14 12:28 PM

Re: Folk Song Tournament

I kind of want to nominate Bob Dylan's Desolation Row but that's like a 12 minute song.

Skepsis93 09-12-14 12:30 PM

Re: Folk Song Tournament

Done! A new version of a very old English ballad.

Swan 09-12-14 12:31 PM

Re: Folk Song Tournament

I nominated it, then decided not to use it. You should go for it.

Re: Folk Song Tournament

Added one.

Miss Vicky 09-12-14 12:46 PM

Re: Folk Song Tournament

jiraffejustin 09-12-14 12:56 PM

Theo 09-12-14 12:57 PM

christine 09-12-14 01:57 PM

christine 09-12-14 02:46 PM

Joe Egan and Gerry Rafferty (Stealers Wheel) sang in folk clubs around Scotland, Rafferty was in a folk group called the Humblebums with the Scottish comedian Billy Connelly before he went out on his own and did stand up, so I guess they have the folk label, Rafferty died in 2011, a very sad end, alcoholism playing a part :(

cricket 09-12-14 03:17 PM

I volunteer Derek

Derek Vinyard 09-12-14 07:28 PM

I add one song !
