Actors You Mistake for Other Actors
I can't be the only one who does this... :rolleys:
I was absolutely certain that Julie Bowen b. 1970 http://www.celebopedia.com/julie-bow...ulie-bowen.jpg Co-star of tv's Ed had begun her career in Girl Interrupted. But that was Clea Duvall b. 1977 http://entimg.msn.com/i/150/Movies/A...37_150x200.jpg Who confuses you? |
After seeing Mission: Impossible III, I was damn near certain that Billy Crudup, who plays Musgrave...
http://www.filmfestivals.com/pixus/f...lly_crudup.jpg ...was actually Jonathon Schaech, AKA Jimmy from That Thing You Do! http://members.tripod.com/jschaech2k/1b402ba0.jpg |
Hmmmm I'll need to think about this one.
Does confusing Clive Owen with Treebeard count? :D As far as purely name-based confusion goes, I was forever getting that spate of three-pronged actresses mixed up when reading about them - Sarah Jessica Parker, Penelope Ann Miller, Mary-Louise Parker, Mary Stuart Masterson, Zsa Zsa Gabor etc. I was always 100% with my mental image of Kristin Scott Thomas, however. |

Tacitus ~ thanks for the explanation of "three pronged actresses", I was picturing John Cameron Mitchell and Jaye Davidson. ;) And yeah, Kristin Scott Thomas is like no one. |

http://img.stopklatka.pl/filmowcy/24600/24689/0.jpg http://bp1.blogger.com/_QjxHHu8UOdc/...ightlinger.jpg Harring and Kightlinger Can't say as I ever get them confused, but dramatic actress Laura Harring (Mulholland Drive) and stand-up comedianne/actress Laura Kightlinger ("Lucky Louie") could be sisters. |
Paul Betttany and Heath Ledger
|
Oh, and sorry: most of you guys will only recognize Ms. Harring from the scene that you're watching so much frame-by-frame that it's burning a hole in your DVDs.
http://www.hotflick.net/flicks/2001_...and_Dr_068.jpg http://www.clublez.com/movies/lesbia...preview_71.jpg Now do you know who I'm talking about? Yeah, her name is Laura, and she has a career beyond an R-rated lesbian scene in a David Lynch movie. |
Although I most certainly enjoy the scene you mention, I enjoy watching her vulnerabilty in the first act of the film and the shift to the cold, calculating schemer of the third act. It's tough to compete with Watt's fantastic turn in MD, but L. Harring plays off her wonderfully, and shows more range than her roles in stuff like The Punisher would lead you to believe she has. Really, i am just floored by her voluptuousness and clearly sexual mystique. Yeah, I have the hots for her. What would you recommend as some of her best wor, aside from the Lynch piece?
Speaking of Lynch, I need to go down a bottle of whiskey and watch Eraserhead... |
Oh, I'm just teasing. Mulholland Drive is far and away the best role she's had yet. I liked her in a movie I saw last night, The King (James Marsh), but she only really has a few scenes where she gets to do anything. The bit where she reaches her emotional breaking point and runs into the street in a daze is very powerful, but she just ain't in the movie all that much.
She did have a good multi-episode role on the fifth season of "The Shield", too. http://www.sensesofcinema.com/images/19/mulholland2.jpg "Can't you get me a job in a decent movie?" I'm not surprised that Naomi Watts' career took off after Mulholland, but it's too bad Harring hasn't had the same kinds of opportunities yet. I mean Watts went on to do 21 Grams, I Heart Huckabees and King Kong while Harring has done Willard and The Punisher (and not even the female lead in The Punisher). The King is certainly a step back in the right direction. We'll have to see if it catches the eye of any good directors or casting agents. Oh, well. |
Checking her catalog after I posted that question, I thought you might have been pulling my leg, but I will check out The King at some point. I am super broke right now, as I am living alone for the first time in ten years, so I have to be tight with the funds until I get a handle on how the bills will flow flying solo. Netflix has been cancelled and my DVD purchasing has been put on hold for a while. Once I get back on my feet (and get my head together a bit) I will give it a go. Thanks for the rec...

Can't say that I've ever confused them for another, but Hope Davis and Nina Siemaszko certainly have very simlar looks. They could play sisters, anyway. Hope gets the more work of the two (American Splendor, Proof, About Schmidt, The Secret Lives of Dentists, Next Stop Wonderland, The Daytrippers, Arlington Road, Mumford, The Weather Man) and will wind up with an Oscar nomination one of these days. Nina, young sister of Casey Siemaszko (Biloxi Blues, Young Guns, Breaking In), mostly toils in series television in supporting and guest starring roles. |

HOW did I just read through three pages of this thread and not see anyone list the "famous" confusion that even the two actors themselves joke about all the time:
Laurence Fishburne and Samuel L. Jackson? Then again, I think it doesn't happen as much nowadays with Jackson so much on the rise and Fishburne hardly seen at all ... but I used to confuse these two guys back in the day when they were both a lot less famous and doing smaller roles. I'm just shocked that Jackson even got mentioned ... but not compared to Fishburne. Oh, and Yoda? The Crudup/Schaech thing: I do believe that your lowly mother was the one who pointed out to you with 100% certainty in her voice that you were wrong and it wasn't Crudup in That Thing You Do! Just thought I'd get my credit where it's due, bud. It's so seldom that I best you on anything movie-related... :D |
I used to have trouble determining Mark Wahlberg from Matt Damon but no longer.
My sis thinks Kevin Spacey is John Malkovich a lot and vice versa. Don't ask why. |
I can see the Wahlberg/Damon thing. But the Spacey/Malkovich thing is, well, a bit of a stretch. :)
|
I used to get Bill Pullman and Bill Paxton mixed up. Even now, sometimes when I hear Bill Paxton's name or see him listed on the credits my minds eye see's Bill Pullman's face.

I was watching The Blaire Witch Project 2 just now and I noticed a few of these actors/actresses looking looking like other better known ones of recent years. This first one was the one that grabbed my attention right away.

Re: Actors You Mistake for Other Actors
We watched The Covenant last night. I kept mixing up the two leads, Steven Strait who played Caleb Danvers and Sebastian Stan who played Chase Collins.
Note to casting directors of shadowy action movies, if I'm constantly wondering, now which one is down, "the good guy" or "the bad guy" during the action, that's not good. Also when naming characters if you cast two guys that look somewhat alike after hair and makeup, you might want to make their character's names dissimulator. I think that might help a bit. |

Meg Ryan and Melinee Griffin...They just look so much alike
sometimes |
Re: Actors You Mistake for Other Actors
I have to disagree. I can't stand Griffith. It blows my mind all the hot men she has done and / or married. Did they put a paper bag over her face or what. Plus I hate her voice.
Meg Ryan OTOH is hot IMO. Catch her full frontal nudity in the movie In The Cut. It's not a great movie except for the sex scenes. |
Melanie GRIFFITH...
2 Attachment(s)
First of all, it's spelled Melanie Griffith. Second of all, she's had such an ever-increasing amount of plastic surgery in the past fifteen years or so, I don't think she looks much like anybody anymore...especially Melanie Griffith. Sadly poor Meg Ryan got all insecure or something and now she, too, has started a barrage of procedures that just make her look damn weird...and no longer like herself. If it's just the post-op offness that you see as similar in the two, OK, I guess, but I don't think at any stage before or after they started slicing and dicing their faces have they ever looked even a little bit similar. DEFINITELY not before. I don't know how you can watch Working Girl or Something Wild back-to-back with When Harry Met Sally... or Innerspace and be confused on which actress is which. So what I'm saying is, I think it's just you. |
Re: Actors You Mistake for Other Actors
Gosh Holden, she is damn weird. :yup:

'80s trio
2 Attachment(s)
A few actors who were momentarily hot in the '80s and early '90s who I used to forget which was which were Michael Nouri, John Shea and Michael Ontkean. But I think it was laregly because they were just kind of non-descript looking guys with dark hair.
As they've aged they became very distinct in my mind, but back when all three were first on the scene they were completely interchangeable in my mind's eye. Michael Nouri got his break when Flashdance (1983) became such a surprise hit, though he had been acting for years. But that success didn't translate into much, though he did get to star in one Sci-Fi cult classic in The Hidden (1987). These days he's pretty much exclusively a TV guest star and he has a recurring role on "The OC". Golly. John Shea's big break was in Costa-Gravas' terrific Missing (1982) with Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek. He starred as RFK in the "Kennedy" TV mini-series in 1983. His career kind of petered out after that hot start, and it was a mostly forgettable line of TV movies and guest appearances. I really liked the TV show he starred in for CBS in 1990, "WIOU" that hoped to be a sort of weekly cross between Broadcast News and Network for the "L.A. Law" set. But it was cancelled after only one season. He did crop up as Lex Luthor to Dean Cain's Superman on "Lois & Clark" and he'll still show up as a guest star here and there, but safe to say the promise of Missing was never delivered. Michael Ontkean was in the '70s cop show "The Rookies" for a couple of years and co-starred with Paul Newman in the crass hockey comedy Slap Shot (1977), but then he pretty much disappeared from anything of quality for a dozen years or so. He reemerged in 1990 as Sheriff Harry S. Truman patroling David Lynch's "Twin Peaks", but right after that momentary blip of fame he disappeared again, relegated to TV movies of the week. He barely works at all these days. They all kinda had the same look and dark hair back then, two of them worked with Kyle MacLachlan, two of them are named Michael, they all spent lots of time on various short-lived TV shows and cropping up as guest stars every damn place on the dial...eh. I'm sure when I saw the first episode of "Twin Peaks" I thought to myself, 'Hey, the Sheriff and MacLachlan are teaming up again like they did in The Hidden. I wonder if this means Jennifer Beals will be along shortly from his Flashdance days?' You can't mistake them anymore, as Nouri has let his hair grow white and Ontkean doesn't show up anywhere, but back in like 1988 if you had shown me their three mug shots and had me place them at the scene of a crime, I would have probably gotten an innocent man thrown in the slammer or told the pigs to round up these triplets. Now they trade time as one-shot murderers and creeps on the various "Law & Order" franchises. |
Re: Actors You Mistake for Other Actors
Thanks, Holden, I'll correct the spelling. That's so kind of you to point it out.
However, Melanie bugs me visually and vocally. She always has. Ever since the first movie I saw her in, which I believe was Working Girl. Meg, OTOH, looked good to me from the first time I saw her. I believe that was on a soap. She looked sweet and fresh. When she starred in the movie, In The Cut, there was no discernible plastic surgery. That was one reason why I liked it. She was confident enough about her body, at that age, to show it on screen. I was quite surprised. I liked her for that. Happily, I've not seen either since their plastic surgery exploits. I think the plastic surgery trend is really sad. I've seen beautiful women, like Hunter Tylo; completely ruin their looks with that. From the pictures you posted, I still think Meg looks better by far. I don't think they look very much alike. I mean apart from being female and having, short, messy, bleached blond hair. I remember Michael Nouri and Michael Ontkean. I liked Nouri the best. I don't remember the other fellow. |

I was narrowly beat out as the new Joker by Heath Ledger." Believe me, I'm all for Meg and most other women taking off their clothes, and I have no idea if Ms. Ryan has yet started surgery on anything other than her face (the only other nude scene she did before In the Cut was in The Doors, and you didn't get to see much other than a nipple then so it's hard to judge). She certainly hasn't done any drastic Cher-like major reconstruction of her body. I think she should be naked in every movie. You bet. But it's sad that she felt compelled to start changing her face when she hit forty, she split up with Dennis Quaid, and started dating Russel Crowe. Age gracefully and naturally, ladies. That's my advice. . . |
Re: Actors You Mistake for Other Actors
I too always thought Melanie and Meg looked similar when they were younger. But I preferred Meg's flicks over Melanie's any day even though that maybe amounted to 2 or 3 of her films lol.

About plastic surgery, I would not feel good about myself if my face didn't work. Of course I'm an anti invasive medical procedures kind of girl anyway. I can't imagine going under the knife at all, much less for iffy results. I'm absolutely paranoid about anesthesia. I can just imagine my husband having to explain to the kids how mommy died because she was vain and wanted to look better. OTOH, para sailing, bungee cord jumping and other "thrill" activities are things I've done, or want to do, at least once. That doesn't make a lot of sense does it? Oh well, that's the human paradox, I suppose. |
