Favorite Horror Film

So, with Halloween rapidly approaching, I thought it would be nice to have a nice little horror movie discussion. (This has probably been done before, but whatev.)

So, leave a response telling me your favorite horror movie, why it's your favorite, and just any other general comments about horror movies.

I think Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho is probably still the best, but if we're going with personal favorites, I would say The Shining. Stanley Kubrick, of course, is a master of the shot. The cinematography is excellent (the shots of Danny riding his tricycle, the feeling of dread you get at the opening credit scene while looking at the mountain). Also, I like that the horrors aren't just there to scare you, but to make a point, which I personally think is something of a rarity in most modern horror movies.

I also have a lot of respect for Wes Craven's Scream, though, because I can't believe a movie managed to blur the lines between actual horror and spoof horror movie so well.

Suspiria :love::love::love:

The cinematography, acting, direction, vibrant colours, amazing death sequences, exploration of witches, and the unbeatable soundtrack

Am I the only person who doesn't think/feel that that Scream is a horror spoof at all? In any way?

Yeah, this is something I've never quite got either, I mean it references some horror films explicitly and talks about some tropes, but I don't think that makes it a spoof really?

I don't know if anybody was thinking it was a spoof when they made it, but the movie is certainly self-aware and humorous. It is definitely commenting on the slasher genre. Do you think it's a straight up horror movie?

It's a satire about other cliche mainstream horror movie... with number of awesome quotes about other classic and brilliant dialogue. The Best thing about Scream is definitely Matthew Lillard tho... totally hilarious

Self aware and humourous? Certainly. But that's very different from spoof or straight out comedy. IMO, anyway.

Despite that, if you're completely unaware of the references I think it works well as a straight up horror film.

I agree it's not technically a spoof. Scary Movie is a spoof. But it is satirizing the slasher genre, and you'd have to be pretty dense not to get what is going on with scenes like this:

Yeah, Scream is just a regular horror film with funny moments. Kevin Williamson, the writer, has stated that. He was simply trying to make a good scary movie again, like Halloween.

I think i would have to say that Alien is my favorite horror movie of all time. It has suspense, so much tension, isolation, creepiness, and science fiction rolled into one movie.

After that I would have to say The Shining, and Texas chainsaw massacre. :)

Alien (1979)

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Halloween (1978)

Cinematography and music. Odd that's a thing again. Those 360 pans are neato.

Psycho (1960)

Norman Bates yo.

The Fly (1986)

This was how my top 10 looked when I did my horror list a few months back. I'm not sure how much have changed when it comes to the top ten films, but I do think The Conjuring and the Insidious films would be just a little bit lower, though I still love them immensely, mainly because it's horror after my head. I also think The Fly would be higher, since my last watch of it made me love it even more.

It is a very suspenseful thriller movie, and it involves a few serial killers who do really disgusting an gruesome stuff. If you think Hannibal and/ or think gruesome killings are horrific to you....then yes it can be horror film.

An American Werewolf in London, Silent Hill, Pan's Labyrinth, Psycho, Dog Soldiers, Evil Dead trilogy, Dawn of the Dead 2004 remake (original is great as well) Night of the Living Dead, The Shining (desperately needs a re-watch though) Antichrist, The Thing and Underworld are the first that come to mind.

It is about a serial killer who eats people and another one who skins women to make a women suit. It is a horror movie. I didn't find it in the "Thriller" section of Blockbuster growing up.

Then stop thinking about it. :p

I was actually always on the side of SOTL not being a horror until I started hearing Alien and Jaws regularly called horror. Now I might side with Swancrotes.- Seato

I am pretty sure genre disagreements was part of the American Revolution too. Taxation without representation, forcing citizens to lodge soldiers, and whether or not SotL was a horror movie were all big issues.

You can see all of these facts in Roland Emmerich's latest film, The Patriot II: The Quickening!

Don't get me started on these. :D I'll throw Aliens onto the pyre, too. Even Se7en seems to be classified as a horror now.
