3 Women (Robert Altman, 1977)
http://www.iceposter.com/thumbs/MOV_3da2cccb_b.jpg This is the first Robert Altman film I've seen; it won't be the last. I was initially attracted to this movie due to its interesting premise, and the triple comparison people often draw between it, Persona, and Mulholland Drive. 3 Women is one of the best "weird" movies I've ever watched, and it has quite possibly the trippiest dream sequence ever put on film. Shelley Duvall and Sissy Spacek are both excellent in their roles, and the time period is evoked wonderfully. A deliriously surreal psychological drama; the more I think about it, the more I love it. |

Re: I Just Saw a Truly Great Film, I Think I'll Post it Here Thread
It was supposedly inspired by Altman's own dreams after watching Ingmar Bergman's Persona on late night television.

^ Yeah. Maybe I'm just weird. There are a lot of people who love MASH a lot, so maybe Hitchfan would love it. I don't know. As for McCabe & Mrs. Miller, I fell in love with its cinematography and how it showed a different side to Westerns other than cowboy hats and Man-without-a-Names.

Re: I Just Saw a Truly Great Film, I Think I'll Post it Here Thread
I am one of the few who disliked MASH.
I also second Mr McCabe & Mrs Miller. It's my favorite Warren Beatty film. Mostly people start off with Altman by watching either The Player or The Long Goodbye. & I absolutely love The Long Goodbye, Elliott Gould is terrific as Marlowe. |

Also, it seemed like TV pilot, maybe it had to do with much of it being in the interiors, but I wouldn't mind watching it again, cos I just love the performances of Donald & Elliott. |

Sokurov created a whole tetralogy apie power. One is about Hitler, another about Lenin, third about an emperor and "Faust" is a final,so I probably see the one about Lenin when I have time. :)
And depressing movies are good. :D I like them more than comedies. |

Aguirre, The Wrath of God
http://unfilmde.files.wordpress.com/...cut_55258.jpeg Everything about this film is just great, just so memorable and iconic in a number of different ways. The visual images created are stunning which make the trip along the Amazon river haunting and dreamlike. The messages behind the film are superb as we see the sins of humans and the desire of Aguirre to become a great man, his character is so superb and memorable, it is summed up in the fantastic final scene. Going to do a full review soon. Got "Mulholland Drive" and "There Will Be Blood" ready to watch as well, really looking forward to both. |

Night of the Hunter (1955), directed by Charles Laughton.
Just amazing, on so many levels. It's the best use of lighting in a black-and-white film I can think of, and there are so many great scenes that have stuck with me for days (the car in the water, the river trip, the girl's song on the river, Lillian Gish being a badass). Robert Mitchum's voice is so powerful and he has such a presence, and his charming psycho is genuinely creepy. A great, surreal, beautiful film that is really difficult to describe. Highly recommended. |

A Woman Under the Influence
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...aL._SY300_.jpg I couldn't imagine a better introduction to Cassavetes. A Woman Under the Influence is easily one of the most powerful dramas I have ever seen and a crown jewel of 70s cinema. Often painful but never less than captivating, I see now why Gena Rowlands' performance in this is hailed as one of the all-time greats. I especially loved how the film's most harrowing scenes were heightened even more by Cassavetes' realistic approach to filmmaking. An incredibly rich and textured examination of the modern nuclear family, social dysfunction, and psychological miscommunication. http://www.sensesofcinema.com/wp-con...-Influence.png |

Whilst I think Goodfellas and The Godfather are both masterpieces, I think this might just be better because not only does it succeed as a gangster film, but it is also better in the way it deals with it's characters and various human aspects - greed, violence, betrayal, friendship/relationships - we have characters like 'Noodles' who are some of the most disgusting, brutal characters we have ever seen yet you feel frustrated and sorry to them because of how they constantly make the bad choices when they think they are doing something right, or what they deserve/are entitled to. De Niro's performance is brilliant and there's just so much I could write about his character. Despite being four hours long as well, this film is constantly engaging, like a magical dream, it feels real yet has a mysterious and surreal aspect to, which is helped by the way the story is told. This and Once Upon a Time in the West might just be the greatest films in their respective genres for me (Crime and Western), in the way they tell succeed in terms of their genre and story they tell as well as combining them with more surreal/magical elements to make it a gripping and enthralling experience, and for their superb character development, in 'West all the characters have their own superb stories that intertwine, in this film we explore different criminal personalities, albeit mainly on just Noodles and Max. |

The Face of Another (Hiroshi Teshigahara, 1966)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...her_poster.jpg This is one of those films that is so thematically rich that I could write about it endlessly and still feel as though I haven't properly consolidated my thoughts on it. Plus, it deals with the nature of identity and the masks people wear when interacting with one another, which are topics that I find infinitely fascinating. Anyways, onto the film. The Face of Another tells the story of a man whose face is horribly scarred in an accident at work, causing him to emotionally shut off from the rest of the world and continue wearing bandages on his face even after it's safe to take them off. He then meets with a psychiatrist, who attempts a radical experiment by giving him a new, synthetic face. The proceedings often feel like The Twilight Zone gone Japanese (not that that's a bad thing) but it's also much more brooding and existential. http://s3.amazonaws.com/auteurs_prod...jpg?1323457022 The second half of the film, which deals with the protagonist wandering around with his 'new face' on, is especially interesting as a unique social experiment. What if, at any time, we could start over and become someone else? Would anybody recognize us? What kind of a background could we create? Who would we meet? What kind of a life would we live? The protagonist's situation in this part of the movie is intriguing simply based on its premise and the implications of the results. As I mentioned, The Face of Another has quite a great deal to say about identity. I'd probably grasp more of that on another viewing, but the deterioration of the main character's social and mental condition by the end of the film suggests to me that any attempts to change one's identity and sense of self will only result in disaster and a loss of one's grip on reality (i.e., the great scene at the end, featuring a hallucination of a crowd of faceless people). http://olponline.files.wordpress.com...till_crowd.jpg There's also a seemingly unrelated subplot in the film involving a beautiful girl in a mental ward, her face half scarred (this seems to have something to do with the atomic bombing of Japan). I'm not entirely sure what this whole subplot means, but the girl strikes me as some sort of inverse of the main character. She seems like a genuinely good person, eager to interact with the world, whereas he's hardly sympathetic and seeking constant isolation. If someone who has seen the film can elaborate on this for me, that'd be great. Teshigahara's direction is amazing, too. He's clearly a master of surrealism and brings the story just the kind of avant-garde style that it requires. The sequence where the protagonist is given his new face by the psychiatrist is particularly captivating. Overall, from a philosophical standpoint, I think this is one of the most fascinating movies I've ever seen. It's a daring social experiment, a disturbing exploration of human identity and isolation, and quite simply a bizarre masterpiece in every way. And I'd be remiss not to mention the score, which is awesome. I'll have to check out Woman in the Dunes next. http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l3...oaf4o1_500.jpg |

Written on the Wind (Douglas Sirk, 1956)
http://www.moviemail.com/images/larg...blackglove.jpg Sirk is a director that I've been meaning to look into for quite some time now, and I can't imagine a better introduction to his work than seeing this on the big screen. This is a wickedly entertaining melodrama with fascinating and deliciously over-the-top characters, highlighted by an especially fantastic and memorable performance by Dorothy Malone. I won't waste words on the gorgeous cinematography, as Sirk is an acknowledged master of Technicolor, but this is a film with substance to match its style. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4p-1w6HEvv.../Dorothy+1.jpg Sirk's bitingly ironic social commentary is at the heart of this film. His characters, while wealthy and privileged, are miserable; they are torn apart from one another by their own emptiness. The dialogue reflects this central theme. After one of them is killed, Malone's character remarks in a testimony that he "needed so much and had so little." Earlier in the film, this character says that "the truth is the only thing that counts, but the truth is ugly." That's not to say Sirk sees these people exclusively as detached, spoiled wretches who have forgotten how to interact with one another beyond superficiality. By the end of the film, two of the characters are able to leave the lifestyle behind in the pursuit of their love for one another, while Malone's character finally transcends the pettiness of her schemes in favor of her (albeit unrequited) love for Rock Hudson's character. A typical Hollywood ending? Maybe, but I see it more as Sirk proclaiming his hope for these people. http://rockhudsonblog.com/wp-content.../02/wotw14.jpg Symbolism abounds in this film. The use of mirrors is especially prominent. They are found in nearly every scene, constantly reflecting the superficiality of these characters' lives. In one sequence, a character in a particularly heightened state of desperation finally shatters this constant motif by throwing a glass of alcohol at his reflection. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cW0cTMZNV9...PDVD_01401.jpg Two other examples that stood out for me: blatant phallic imagery near the end of the film (pictured below), and the use of autumn leaves chaotically blowing into the doorway of the house as a drunken character stumbles in, seeking to kill his best friend. To me, this represented the entrance of "nature" (man's most primal urges) into his home, at last demolishing the false pretenses of luxury and comfort that he has set up for himself. This was an especially powerful and visceral sequence for me. http://www.northwestchicagofilmsocie...15-written.jpg Anyways, this was an absolutely stunning film that I'd recommend to anyone, especially someone unfamiliar with Sirk. I can't wait to see Imitation of Life at the same theater next week. |

Vertigo (1958)
http://i.imgur.com/KOTL7AH.jpg First post of this thread says one has to be REALLY TRULY IMPRESSED before posting in this thread. To say Vertigo has truly impressed me, would be an understatement. Even though I posted in the Rate The Last Movie You Saw thread just minutes after I finished the movie, I feel that this movie deserves a post here, because it really is one of the greatest that I have ever seen in my entire life, and very rarely has a movie blown me away like this. I cannot stop thinking about it. I have seen The Birds, which was a good horror movie. Psycho was even better. Rear Window was very good. These three previous experiences made me think that Hitchcock is all about suspense, horror, mystery and such things. But Vertigo is different, it is unique. It starts as a very scary thriller full of suspense, and continues to be one, for over an hour. During the first hour of the movie I truly felt it was one of the scariest films I'd seen in my life. Then it becomes very romantic, and this is probably my favourite part. Then it becomes sad and depressing, and this is the part when I knew in an instant that I was witnessing a masterpiece. And then there's the perfect ending. |

What truly impressed me is The Assassination of Jesse James. I'd heard of the movie before it's release but never bothered to go to the cinema to watch it and the lack of fanfare surrounding it made me forget it even existed. I regret not watching it in cinema because it is exceptionally beautiful, each shot well thought out, every angle meticulously planned. It seems more like a science experiment on how to make movies than something which is thrown onto the screen with red blooded passion, ala Tarantino or McTiernan.
Having said that, the characterisation of Jesse James (played by Brad Pitt at his absolute best) and Casey Affleck's Robert Ford is not only compelling but at times heart breaking. This must be one of the most underrated movies of the 21st century and is up there with There Will Be Blood, Up, The Dark Knight, The Departed, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, LOTR: The Two Towers and Pan's Labyrinth as a true masterpiece of modern cinema. |

Compared to TDK and LOTR? Yeah, probably.

The Departed is awesome! And please, LOTR and TDK are masterpieces. Obviously that's not a complete list of movies which I believe to be truly great throughout the 21st century but when someone asks me what are my fave movies in recent times they instantly come to mind. As they do for millions of people around the world.

LOTR is great, TDK, not so much, it's very good but not a masterpiece. Anyway, these two movies are like Pulp Fiction and The Godfather in terms of broad appeal and popularity among millions of people and they represent the two most liked movies of hollywood's modern phase dominated by fantasy/science fiction films that are heavy in CGI use. In the same way that The Godfather represents the most liked movie of hollywood's crime drama phase.
Honeykid has conservative tastes, he doesn't like fantasy, science fiction or animation very much so he doesn't like movies that use much CGI to create fantasy words, such as LOTR and TDK. |

The Dark Knight is a better film than The Departed.

One of my favorite Scorsese movies! Out shined only by Goodfellas and Taxi Driver IMO.

Watched loads of films that I could post in this thread recently, but I am going to post Seven Samurai, finally watched it and it's amazing, defines the meaning of 'epic film' and is instant top 10 stuff, I feel.

Shock Corridor (1963)
https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/i...8hBH7cRHNUj3n9 Wanted to see this for ages when Scorsese praised it in his documentary. And now that I've seen it,I'd say that it's a pretty good film.Maybe not one of those extremely well-crafted or with some great meaning about life movies but just and interesting story about a man who commits himself to mental institution in order to solve a crime and in the end..Well,nothing good ever happens when you're around psychos.I think it could have been an inspiration for One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. |

Nope. The novel came out before this movie. :)

Re: I Just Saw a Truly Great Film, I Think I'll Post it Here Thread
yeah, the novel is the main material but another films could've inspired it,too.
PTA based There Will be Blood on Oil! but he said that he repeatedly watched The Treasure Of Sierra Madre during the making of TWBB. |
The World of Apu (1959) by Satyajit Ray
http://www.criticker.com/img/films/p...rld_of_Apu.jpg Instant top 10 material and the best movie of the Apu Trilogy, even though the two first movies sets a really high standard. For me this was an emotional roller coaster ride that i have not experience before. Beautiful cinematography , engaging acting and a lovely soundtrack by Ravar Shankar. The movie completely disarmed me as a human being. https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/i...SoAtsSMw9jqRRw |

Close-up
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_p1gxRVddvu...0/closeup1.jpg When I love a movie this much I usually have a lot more to say, but I can't add much outside of what I said in the 90s Countdown thread. It's just a great movie, that really added a new perspective for me on cinema. Also it did teach me a ton about Iranian films. A true masterpiece and something fresh. Other films I've seen that mixed documentary style with plot like WR:Mysteries of the Organism or some Chantal Akerman movies didn't do it for me at all, this wowed me. - |

Stardust Memories (1980)
http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ltqufrv5VV1qcriw3.jpg THIS WAS AMAZING! It's the twenty-first picture I've seen from Allen so far and this is certainly in my top 5 favorite Woody Allen films, if not in my top 3. BRILLIANT STUFF. I'll write a little more about it in my next review post, but I can tell you now that it is HILARIOUS, while being extremely relatable and true (at least for me). It's also a great hommage to Fellini's 8 1/2. |
Carnal Knowledge (1971)
http://i968.photobucket.com/albums/a...knowledge2.jpg http://static.rogerebert.com/redacto...edge_bimbo.jpg An extraordinary script that is darkly comic and extremely dramatic at the same time, outstanding acting performances, very tasteful directing and an interesting subject (to me personally). This film has it all. Very satisfying experience! (+) |

Carnal Knowledge is a film which really divides opinion, but I was oddly confident that you'd like it.

The Swimmer (1968)
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-b6A_9IsHaN...2B1968%2B4.jpg What a great film! Burt Lancaster is amazing as Ned Miller and the story of the character is constructed in a brilliant way. This haunting piece of cinema deserves to be watched by every cinephile out there! |
Re: I Just Saw a Truly Great Film, I Think I'll Post it Here Thread
I really loved "The impossible", a disaster drama movie directed by Juan Antonio Bayona and featuring Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts. It's about a family on Holiday in Thailand in 2004 separated by the tsunami.
The story wasn't just sad, the director succeeded to make a very moving film with so much hope and love between the members of this family. Ewan McGregor does an amazing performance and the film-maker as made a really good job, the pictures are just wonderful. I'd recommend you to see it. |
