Take 5 : Film-Noir

1. Touch Of Evil
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._restored.jpeg
The greatest Welles film ever. Charlton Heston gives his best performance as a narcotics officer trying to take down the corrupted police captain played by none other than the director himself. Certainly is the grimmest noir!

2. The Third Man
http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV...0,214,317_.jpg
Despite appearing on screen for a couple of minutes, Welles delivers one of the greatest lines in cinematic history.....

3. The Maltese Falcon
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg
Bogey is amazing.

4. Out Of The Past
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg
If Touch Of Evil was the grimmest noir, then Out Of The Past is the most beautifully shot black and white film ever.

5. M
http://www.leninimports.com/mlang1.gif
This film had a tremendous impact on crime/detective movies. The granddaddy of noir.

Other fantastic noir:
-Sunset Boulevard
-The Big Sleep

And im still waiting for Gunny to finish his noir list... :bored:

Perhaps Maya Deren's most essential work, perhaps not even my favorite actually, but nonetheless impressive. Deren's work becomes a venture into dreamlike states. How she edits films is astounding, using repeated actions, etc. to convey a person's inner emotional state of mind. She was the God Mother of all of the American Avant-Gardists, and the reason I specifically saved her, and this film, for the last of "Take 5".

Hope you see some of these films, and enjoy them as much as I have!

Just seen this....Very very impressive film, this coming from someone who does not appreciate Dog Star Man (the film lol).

Top 5 films that the younger generation should appreciate:

1. Citizen Kane - so what if it's in black and white? It's still very well made, even by today's standards.
2. Dr. Strangelove - this is comedic gold, unlike the new breed of so-called "comedy".
3. The Godfather - A subtle and artful movie, the opposite of the wrongly-praised Moulin Rouge (I hate this film).
4. On the Waterfront - This is true acting, young ones! Marlon Brando: memorize the name.
5. Dr. Zhivago - Romantic mushy films of today can go kiss this movie's ass, with some exceptions. This is love done right.
