Wow.

Edit: Oh, you're right, Leptirica and Coffy both came out that year.

Not over thinking it is key. I'll say whatever I feel at the moment. I'm not concerned if they don't know a movie I mention or if they think I've got pretentious taste. If anything, if they give me a blank look in response I can comfortably walk away from the conversation. Anyone who treats something they haven't heard of with confusion or disdain is a person I don't want to talk to anyways.

You're actually correct; I don't think I own a crucifix. Maybe I should just yell some fitting profanities about the inquirer's mother, then :D

Same thing for me when I saw Blue. Cleo From 5 to 7 was the one that "floored" me. Blue ended up being a good movie and therefore I finished the trilogy, but CF5-7 was something special for me and I agree that Cleo is in fact a masterpiece. Blue is my second favorite and Red my least favorite.

Bleu and Cleo both floored me. Floored. I never really stop thinking about them.

I would tell them that it depends on my mood. Some days my favorite movie is Arsenic and Old Lace (1944), but other days it's Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), or WALL·E (2008), Or sometimes it's Sunday in New York (1963).

And then there are days that it's 12 Angry Men (1957), When Harry Met Sally... (1989), While You Were Sleeping (1995), Singin' in the Rain (1952), The Pajama Game (1957), or any one of dozens of other movies.

My brain inherently rejects even the thought of one single favorite movie. It would be like saying that I want hot dogs for every meal for the rest of my life or will only wear red shirts. The idea of tying down my brain with "one single favorite" is like chaining my feet to the floor....I'd have to reject the very idea of such a thing. It would be like giving me a frog brain that only eats flies and that's probably maligning frogs.

Wearing a red shirt is not good for your health. Trekkie for life!

Re: What to Say If Somebody Asks You What Your Favorite Movie Is?

On my way to work, I remembered when I had very definite favorites in my thirties. Europa Europa (1990) a thriller about a Jewish teenage man/boy hiding from the Nazis in Poland as a Hitler Youth. It was based on a true story. Just harrowing!

Insomnia (1997), not the lame American version about a serial killer, but the noirish Norwegian thriller filmed during the endless daylight of a northern summer about a man who kills his young girlfriend during a fight. It has Stellen Skarsgard at his peak, as the detective, who kills his partner. Skarsgard hunts done the murderer while covering his own tracks. It is riveting!

Une liaison pornographique (1999) a french film about a love affair between a man and a woman who meet throught the personals in a pornographic magazine. It is called An Affair of Love in English which I thought was as clunky a title as the French but at least doesn't confuse it with the American remake of Love Affair. It is sexy, funny and sad as they fall in love and realize that their sexy romp won't or shouldn't translate to a relationship. Sergi Lopez and Nathalie Baye are so sexy and fun.
These three movies and a few more took up a lot of space in my head for a long time. They were just immersive and devastating to me.

They: What's your favorite movie?
Me: I don't know.

I understand how it can be a conundrum, but the question here seems to be more a matter of "what would *they* think", rather than what your actual favorite movie is. Just be honest, and explain. The point shouldn't be just to shoot a title and leave it at that, but to incite a conversation. Who knows? Maybe your favorite movie will become *their* favorite movie!
